61H3 - Structure of a Language - Summer 2026
Course description:
An introduction to the phonetics, phonology, word-formation rules, syntax, and script of a featured language other than English or French. Students will use the tools of linguistic analysis learned in prior courses to examine the structural properties of this language. No prior knowledge of the language is necessary.
Salary
:
In accordance with the current CUPE 3902 Unit 3 Collective Agreement, the stipend rate for a half course (Y, F or S), inclusive of vacation pay, will be:
- Sessional Lecturer I: $9,820.70
- Sessional Lecturer I – Long Term: $10,510.03
- Sessional Lecturer II: $10,510.03
- Sessional Lecturer II – Long Term: $10,760.27
- Sessional Lecturer III: $10,760.27
- Sessional Lecturer III – Long Term: $11,030.35
Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.

Minimum Qualifications
:
Ph.D. in Linguistics or related field. Strong academic record and professional promise. Previous experience teaching structure of a particular language, linguistic fieldwork or a comparable course required.
Applicants must specify which language they would feature as part of their application materials. Featured language should not be French, English, Chinese dialects or recently featured languages.
Duties
:
- All normal duties related to the design and teaching of a university credit course, including preparation and delivery of course content;
- Development, administration and marking of assignments;
- Calculation and submission of grades;
- Holding regular office hours.

This job is posted in accordance with the CUPE 3902 Unit 3 Collective Agreement.

Preference in hiring is given to qualified individuals advanced to the rank of Sessional Lecturer II or Sessional Lecturer III in accordance with Article 14:12 of the CUPE 3902 Unit 3 collective agreement.

Undergraduate or graduate students and postdoctoral fellows of the University of Toronto are covered by the CUPE 3902 Unit 1 collective agreement rather than the Unit 3 collective agreement, and should not apply for positions posted under the Unit 3 collective agreement.
