131H1F Practicals – Introduction to Physics I

Course description: A first university physics course primarily for students not intending to pursue a Specialist or Major program in Physical or Mathematical Sciences. Topics include: classical kinematics & dynamics, momentum, energy, force, friction, work, power, angular momentum, oscillations, waves, sound.

Estimated TA support: TBA hours (contingent upon enrolment)

Class schedule:

Practicals: Monday and Wednesday 3:00pm-5:00pm and 5:00pm-7:00pm

Lectures: Monday 1:00pm-3:00pm;
Wednesday 1:00pm-3:00pm;
Friday 1:00pm-3:00pm

The delivery method for this course is currently in-person. Please note that, in keeping with current circumstances, the course delivery method may change as determined by the Faculty or the Department.

Pay for half course, vacation pay included:

Sessional Lecturer I: $9,820.70
Sessional Lecturer I Long Term: $10,510. 04
Sessional Lecturer II: $10,510.04
Sessional Lecturer II Long Term: $10,760.28
Sessional Lecturer III: $10,760.28
Sessional Lecturer III Long Term: $11,030.36

Minimum Qualifications:

  • PhD in Physics required
  • Previous experience in teaching introductory laboratory physics at the University level required
  • Preferred Qualifications:

  • Preference will be given to individuals with prior experience and demonstrated ability in teaching a similar course
  • Description of duties:

  • The preparation and delivery of course content (practicals)
  • Supervision and training of teaching assistant(s) assigned to course, including overseeing the TAs DDAH forms
  • The Sessional Lecturer of the Practicals meets regularly with the TAs ensuring the labs are run smoothly. The material is the same as what is being taught in lectures, but during Practicals, time is spent in discussion, problem-solving, hands-on activities and team-work. Work done in the Practicals counts toward the students’ mark in the course. TAs have 3 hours of training at the beginning of the course and two 1-hour TA meetings every week, supervised by the Sessional Lecturer of the Practicals.
  • Working in collaboration with the teaching team throughout the semester to make sure the labs and course content are delivered smoothly; submission of final Practicals grades.
