11H3 Introductory Chemistry II:
Reactions and Mechanisms

Course description:
This course quantitatively examines reactions and equilibria in chemical systems with an emphasis on their thermodynamic properties and chemical kinetics. The course begins with a close examination of solutions followed by dynamic chemical equilibrium. This leads directly to acid/base and solubility equilibria and thermochemistry, including calorimetry. The course concludes with thermodynamics, kinetics and electrochemistry with a strong emphasis on the how these are connected to Gibbs Free Energy.

This course includes a three hour laboratory every other week.

Specific duties will occur between July 1, 2026 and August 31, 2026.

Salary:
Starting September 1, 2025 the following rates of pay apply for half courses (F or S), inclusive of vacation pay: $9,820.70 for a Sessional Lecturer I; $10,510.04 for a Sessional Lecturer I-Long Term; $10,510.4 for a Sessional Lecturer II; $10,760.23 for an Sessional Lecturer II-Long Term; $10,760.23 Sessional Lecturer III; and $11,030.34 for a Sessional Lecturer III-Long Term.

Minimum Qualifications

Ph.D. in Chemistry or related field. Previous experience and demonstrated excellence in teaching similar or related courses at the university level. Previous experience teaching both lectures and managing labs. Preference will be given to those who have demonstrated experience in supporting junior undergraduate students in strengthening metacognitive skills and supporting a wide array of accessibility needs.

Description of Duties

The hired sessional instructor will manage the delivery of lectures and labs for this course. Lecture-related duties include the preparation of lectures, in-person lecture delivery (4h/week), creation of and grading of term tests and final exams, marks management, holding regularly scheduled weekly office hours, and management of the Quercus course page. Lab-related duties include distributing supporting materials to the lab TAs, overseeing the delivery of the last five weeks of experiments in the course, and overseeing the lab TAs' grading and marks management.
