The Department of Sociology at the University of Toronto is consistently the top‑ranked sociology department in Canada and one of the best in the world. We have 30 faculty members and are home to the Centre for Global Social Policy, created in 2013 to support collaborative, international research that speaks to pressing social policy concerns. The Department also houses the tri‑campus graduate programmes in sociology, with over 100 graduate students enrolled.

Your opportunity

Under the general direction of the Graduate Chair and the Associate Graduate Chair, the incumbent performs a broad range of administrative duties for the Sociology graduate program including the administration of teaching assistantships. The incumbent works closely with Graduate Chairs, faculty, and staff in a collaborative team environment focused on supporting graduate student success.

Your responsibilities will include
  • Implementing plans and process improvements for graduate program activities.
  • Coordinating admissions and recruitment processes, including determining logistical requirements, reviewing and assessing applications, preparing files for committee consideration and promoting programs at recruitment events.
  • Coordinating the preparation, maintenance, and distribution of program and course materials, including handbooks, websites, and other communications.
  • Analyzing and maintaining statistical and administrative data to support enrolment projections, course planning, timetabling and reporting.
  • Creating, editing, and coordinating program communications, including the preparation of materials for current and prospective students (e.g. brochures, e‑newsletters, social media, and web platforms).
  • Advising current and prospective graduate students on academic and financial matters by explaining policies, options, and implications, with sensitivity to individual circumstances and diverse backgrounds.
  • Making informed referrals and supporting individuals with appropriate referral contacts.
  • Coordinating the recruitment and administration of teaching assistantships and instructional appointments, including interpreting eligibility guidelines, verifying course access in student information systems, and processing payroll.
  • Ensuring compliance with university procedures and guidelines.
  • Handling sensitive and confidential information.
  • Serving as a key administrative resource for the graduate program.
Essential Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree or an acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum four (4) years of relevant experience in academic program administration and student services in a post‑secondary environment or research‑intensive institution.
  • Experience with advising students and faculty members on academic guidelines and procedures.
