Reporting to Manager, Research, Analysis & Policy, the Librarian is to maintain library services in Toronto Public Health library and maintain information resources.
- Administers, troubleshoots, and resolves issues with library systems and tools, including hardware, software, and subscription account set-up and access issues; resolves technology issues through appropriate commercial vendors and internal channels. Creates and maintains documentation related to the implementation and use of technology and its maintenance.
- Liaises with Public Health operations and business services staff and external vendors to ensure the proper functioning of electronic library systems and resources used for the Toronto Public Health Library services.
- Designs, develops and maintains library databases, in consultation with Management.
- Develops and enhances the library website.
- Provides original or copy cataloguing of materials using Anglo American Cataloguing Rules (AACR2), Resource Description and Access (RDA), or other standards and formats as required. Provides classification of library materials, through assignment of a call number, using Library of Congress Classification.
- Prepares and provides TPH staff with in-person or online training and orientation related to library resources and tools (i.e. bibliographic management software), literature search best practices, library services, Evidence Informed Decision Making (EIDM), copyright and access considerations, and other related topics/tools as required.
- Designs, tracks, and collects usage statistics or client feedback related to library services as required, e.g. annual reports, collection development decisions. Ensures metrics are accurately recorded, retained, and analyzed for ad-hoc reporting.
- Performs a variety of literature searching in Ovid MEDLINE or Pub Med, Embase, Scopus, CINAHL, Cochrane Library databases and other bibliographic databases on various platforms in support of staff reports, evidence-based practice, professional development initiatives, policy development and program support. Completes requests with varying deadlines and levels of thoroughness, using judgement to prioritize and negotiate deadlines as required to meet business needs.
- Evaluates and analyzes TPH needs and prepares innovative and practical recommendations to improve access and use of electronic resources/products, reference services, and information dissemination products to communicate relevant and emerging knowledge across the Division.
- Supports teams engaged in EIDM training or other research tasks as they engage in completing evidence syntheses, rapid reviews or research projects and trains staff on rapid review methodology and its limitations.
- Contributes to collection development (sourcing materials, obtaining quotes, building relevant collection lists and removal of items) in public health and related disciplines along with related tasks such as curating book lists, inputting or finalizing book orders for print or electronic collections using online platforms (EBSCOhost, ECM, GOBI, Pro Quest, Amazon, etc.)
- Provides input to Manager/Supervisor on library policies/procedures and improvements that can be made.
- Participates in internal or external committees [library advisory committee, Health Science Information Consortium (HSIC) committees or working groups] or professional development opportunities.
- Liaises with colleagues within the health sciences field to stay abreast of trends and developments in the field [Ontario Public Health Libraries Association (OPHLA) members mailing, HSIC committees, etc.]. Collaborates with external /internal stakeholders on literature searches, service delivery, duplication checks.
