The team

The Central Communications team in University Relations provides a range of communication services and skills to the university including strategic communications advice, media relations, community engagement, internal communications, publications, and crisis and communications/ issues management.

The Opportunity

The Manager, Publications develops and manages plans and activities for institutional writing assignments and print and online publications for Toronto Metropolitan University. Leads a team of internal and external resources. Supports the University’s communication strategies and objectives and proactively delivers the University’s key messages and success stories to enhance its reputation, brand and image.

Responsibilities
  • Leads and manages the development and publication process for primary print and online publications, including Toronto Met Today and Toronto Met University magazine, web pages and social media
  • Participate in strategic planning initiatives to ensure all print and online publications and web pages enhance TMU’s reputation while engaging and informing target audiences
  • Coordinates the production process for assigned print and online publications, including RFP process, production, negotiate approval and delivery of drafts to internal clients and external staff
  • Oversees hiring, performance management, mentorship and development of staff, including assessment of training needs
  • Researches current industry standards and best practices for publications, print and electronic and new publication production procedures, techniques, trends and solutions to production problems
Qualifications
  • Post‑secondary degree in Journalism, Communications or related disciplines
  • At least five (5) to seven (7) years of relevant work experience as a Writer and Editor in print and online publications in progressively responsible positions, including experience as an editor of a major magazine
  • At least three (3) years’ management experience
  • Knowledge of print and online publication processes
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of the post‑secondary sector
  • Demonstrated creative problem‑solving skills and sound judgement
  • Excellent research skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and presentation skills, including the ability to write and edit quickly and accurately, speak succinctly and translate complex concepts into clear, audience‑specific language
  • Strong interpersonal skills including tact, diplomacy and political acumen to develop positive relationships at all levels of a complex organization
