Financial Reporting, Tax Accountant
Toronto, Ontario (Midtown, on the subway line)
Salary $80,000 to $100,000
After a few years in public accounting you start to notice something.
Some firms give you variety and real client exposure.
Others slowly turn into production lines.
This firm sits firmly in the first camp.
Their clients are owner managed businesses across construction, manufacturing, real estate and automotive. Companies typically doing between five million and fifty million dollars in revenue.
So the conversations with clients actually matter.
You will work across audits, reviews and compilations for privately owned businesses in a range of industries. On the tax side you will prepare and review corporate and personal returns including T2 and T1 filings, along with T4s, T5s and some T3 work. There is also occasional exposure to foreign reporting such as T1135 and T1134.
The audit work is proper audit work too.
Planning engagements. Assessing risk. Fraud considerations. Sampling. Building clear documentation using Case Ware and Case View rather than simply rolling forward last year’s file.
Clients are not kept at a distance. You will meet them, talk through their year end results and help them understand the tax implications of decisions such as salary versus dividend.
The team works mainly from the Toronto office initially so new hires can properly integrate with the team. Once you are settled in there is some hybrid flexibility available.
If you have 2-3 years+ of public accounting experience and enjoy working with privately owned businesses, this is the sort of role where your experience grows quickly.

Ryan Jaiswal is a Recruiter for Distinct Recruitment. He is an ex Accountant who is a little better at recruiting than he was at doing tax returns or reviewing financial statements. He has handled accountancy recruitment for clients since 2009. His particular specialism is recruiting for CPA firms as well as some assignments in private industry to support his CPA firm clients.
Outside of work he is a dad of young twins who keep him busy. So if you want to talk to a recruiter who understands the need for flexibility or work life balance he will certainly understand.

If not, no harm done. Clicking apply is not a marriage proposal.
