Auburn-Washburn Unified School District 437 is a district consisting of 128 square miles of suburban and rural areas in southwest Topeka and Shawnee county. Presently, we have 13 total attendance centers — one early childhood center, seven elementary schools, one middle school, one high school, and two alternative learning centers.

Job Description

TITLE: Bus Driver

SALARY LEVEL
: $22.00/hour

TERM OF EMPLOYMENT
: 9 months/year (as needed)

* Previous bus driving experience helpful, but not required.

* Assistance training and obtaining Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with S&P Endorsement provided.

REPORTS TO: Supervisor of Transportation

EVALUATION
:
Performance of this job will be evaluated annually by the Supervisor of Transportation.

JOB GOAL: To provide safe and efficient transportation so that students may enjoy the fullest possible advantage from the district’s curriculum and extracurricular program.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Obey all traffic laws and safety regulations for school buses.
  • Practice good public relation policies to be a positive representative of the school system.
  • Maintain discipline when students are on the bus.
  • Report undisciplined students to the proper authority.
  • Keep assigned bus clean and fueled.
  • Keep to assigned schedule.
  • Perform a pre-trip inspection prior to starting the route.
  • Notify the proper authority in case of mechanical failure or lateness.
  • Discharge students only at authorized stops.
  • Exercise responsible leadership when on out-of-district school trips.
  • Transport only authorized students.
  • Report all accidents and complete required reports.
  • Enforce regulations against smoking and eating on the bus.
  • Qualifications

    QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Hold a valid Kansas Commercial Driver’s License (C.D.L. B or A with S & P Endorsements) OR ability to attend training and obtain Kansas Commercial Driver’s License
  • Thorough knowledge of traffic laws, bus regulations, district policies, rules, and transportation regulations.
  • Good driving skills.
  • No serious driving violations.
  • Ability to pass a bus driver physical examination.
  • Ability to pass a Medic First Aid Course.
  • Ability to pass a Defensive Driving Course.
  • Ability to maintain good discipline on bus.
  • Ability to get along well with students, patrons, and staff; exercising courtesy and tact.
  • Experience driving a bus preferred.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as are determined to be appropriate and acceptable.
  • Must be 18 years of age or over.
  • Attend and/or watch required safety meetings.
  • PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Climbing:
    Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. The amount and kind of climbing required exceeds that required for ordinary locomotion.
  • Stooping:
    Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist, requires full use of the lower extremities and back muscles.
  • Kneeling:
    Bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees.
  • Crouching:
    Bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine.
  • Reaching:
    Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
  • Pushing:
    Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force in order to thrust forward, downward or outward.
  • Pulling:
    Using upper extremities to exert force in order to draw, drag, haul or rug objects in a sustained motion.
  • Standing:
    Particularly for sustained periods of time.
  • Grasping:
    Applying pressure to an object with fingers and palm.
  • Talking:
    Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word.
  • Hearing:
    Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication.
  • Repetitive motions:
    Substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/ or fingers.
  • Light work:
    Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or…
