The incumbent serves as a Supervisory Police Officer (Sergeant) ensuring a safe & secure environment across all VA Administrations within various settings, including a variety of jurisdictional environments, such as VHA Medical Centers & facilities. The incumbent provides security & assistance to occupants of the facility to which they serve. The incumbent is expected to empathize, engage, and communicate with all individuals and sets a positive example for subordinates to follow.
Responsibilities- Direct and supervise subordinate Police Officers, collaborating with the Police Supervisor to carry out the organization’s mission on Departmental and other VA properties.
- Direct law enforcement assignments to preserve peace, prevent, detect, and investigate crimes, arrest or apprehend violators, and assist citizens in emergencies, including protection of civil rights.
- Plan work schedules and sequence of operations daily to assure even flow and distribution, efficient handling of priority cases, and meeting of deadlines; revise schedules as needed based on workload and resources.
- Coordinate with law enforcement representatives of other units concerning priorities, procedures, and resource planning; recommend supplies, equipment maintenance, and facility safety.
- Assign work to subordinate officers based on difficulty, requirements, personnel capabilities, experience, and available resources; issue written instructions and procedures for non-routine or complex assignments.
- Respond to highly dangerous and active crimes in progress, making independent decisions to coordinate immediate steps to preserve life and property.
- Prepare performance standards, review work progress or completion, analyze logs and activity reports to identify problems, take corrective action, and report status of operations.
- Select and recommend officers for promotions, reassignments, changes in status or recognition of outstanding performance; prepare formal requests for vacancies or recruitment.
- Approve routine leave requests, recommend action for unusual leave usage; receive formal grievances, resolve at supervisory level, and recommend disciplinary action.
- Manage discipline, including suspensions, demotions, warnings, or removals as needed.
- Participate in suicide prevention program, intervene and de-escalate active suicidal behavior, and prevent suicides.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Physical RequirementsThe work requires, on a regular and recurring basis, considerable and strenuous physical exertion such as running, frequent climbing of multiple flights of stairs, and carrying items weighing over 50 pounds. It requires stamina, physical agility, dexterity, and strength to pursue, apprehend or detain persons who are often uncooperative, assaultive, and/or armed.
Work EnvironmentThe work involves both moderate and high risks and possible endangerment of life or serious injury that requires the exercise of safety precautions and use of personal protective equipment. The work is performed in settings in which there is regular and recurring exposure to moderate to severe discomforts and unpleasantness, such as high temperatures in confined spaces, high temperatures due to mandatory protective personal equipment, or adverse weather conditions during extended periods of traffic and patrol duties.
The work involves moderate risk requiring exercise of safety precautions when working around hazardous materials such as toxic gases, explosives, infectious biological materials, and others that pose a moderate risk of exposure.
