Court of Appeals Research Attorney I or II

Research Attorney I Grade 42: starting salary $69,392.12

Research Attorney II Grade 47: starting salary $78,404.73

Eligible for step increases at six months to $71,131 or $80,350 and at one year to $76,495 or $86,461

Job Duties

These positions involve highly responsible and confidential legal work for Chief Judge Sarah

E. Warner and the judges of the Kansas Court of Appeals. A research attorney reviews the briefs and underlying case record, researches questions of law presented, prepares prehearing memoranda based on the facts of the case and applicable law, aids the judges in their decision-making, and performs other tasks as assigned. The Research Attorneys hired for these positions will be part of Chief Judge Warner's Special Unit.

They will work on cases for multiple judges and may also be asked to conduct additional legal research and provide legal guidance relating to the administration of the Court of Appeals.

Employment Dates

Positions are open for immediate hire on a term through July 2027 (extension of this term is possible).

Required Education, Experience, and Licensing

Applicants must have graduated from an accredited law school. Although not required, preference will be given to applicants with a GPA in the top one-third of their graduating class. To qualify for an Attorney II position, applicants must have at least 2 years of experience as a research attorney or similar experience. Before employment may begin, applicants must have a license to practice law in Kansas.

Required Abilities

Exercise sound judgment in difficult and confidential situations. Recognize and analyze relevant facts, evidence, issues, and applicable law in complex cases. Write clearly, thoroughly, and concisely in an organized manner. Demonstrate familiarity with Microsoft Word, Adobe Acrobat, and electronic legal research methods.
