The City of Basehor is hiring for a Police Officer. Basehor is a growing city in the southeast corner of Leavenworth County and is uniquely positioned with great accessibility to the Greater Kansas City Metro Area. Basehor is the 2nd fastest growing city in Kansas with a population of 5,000 or more. The population in Basehor is 7,996 residents and has increased in population by 48.9% in the last 10 years.
Basehor is also the 2nd safest city in Kansas. The Basehor Police Department has 14 sworn officers, including the Police Chief.

POSITION SUMMARY
Under the supervision of the Police Sergeant, the Police Officer protects and serves the citizens of Basehor. This position provides citizen assistance, enforces all federal, state, and local laws, and performs patrol duties. Making arrests, issuing traffic violations, and investigating crimes and accidents are primary responsibilities of this position. This employee should possess good communication, and public relation skills.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Enforces all federal, state, and local laws and ordinances
Protects the life and property of citizens of Basehor; makes arrests, and issues traffic citations; performs routine patrol and traffic control duties, and prepares reports and files; investigates crime scenes, seizes, and preserves evidence; performs building checks
Assists ambulance crew as necessary; provides citizen assistance; responds to emergency situations, and performs CPR and First Aid as needed
Operates law enforcement equipment including patrol vehicles, firearms, and communications
Interviews witnesses, suspects, and victims; serves warrants, subpoenas, and other legal documents, testifies in court
Maintains (cleans) department equipment and vehicles
Conducts safety programs for the public
Performs animal control duties in the absence of the animal control officer
Provides security during various events
Performs other duties as deemed necessary or assigned
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
Experience:
Full
-time law enforcement experience is preferred. Employee is expected to have acquired the necessary information and skills to perform the job reasonably well within one year of employment. KLETC training is required to be obtained, or previously certified officers will be accepted.
Education:
High School Diploma or Equivalent and certification from a recognized Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center are required. An Associate Degree in Criminal Justice or related degree is preferred. Continuing education as required annually, and a valid Kansas Driver’s License is required.
Technical
Skills:
A thorough knowledge of all federal, state, and local laws and ordinances, CPR and First Aid, law enforcement techniques, and mathematics is required. This employee must be able to efficiently operate firearms, patrol vehicles, computers, two-way radios, radar equipment, breath analysis equipment, and other law enforcement equipment. The ability to concentrate on tasks in the presence of distractions, to complete and check forms and documents, to understand and anticipate problems, and to read and interpret maps, manuals, legal documents, reports, and written instructions is required.
This employee should possess good public relation, oral and written communication skills.
Problem Solving:
Problem solving is a factor in this position. This employee encounters problems with domestic violence, citizen complaints, traffic violations, and criminal investigations.
Decision Making:
Decision making is a factor in this position. This employee makes decisions about making arrests, investigating crimes and accidents, and performing daily duties in the safest and most efficient manner.
Supervision:
This employee works under the supervision of the Sergeant. This officer has no supervisory duties.
