Position
Purpose:
To continue the successful learning of exceptional students by providing and facilitating quality support to the program while the full time para is absent.
Applicant needs to be honest, a self-starter, and a hard worker. Paraprofessional Substitutes may work with gifted, moderately and/or severely disabled, learning disabled, behavioral disabled, physically impaired, autistic, hearing impaired, visually impaired, speech impairedstudents.
QUALIFICATIONS- High school diploma or GED;
- skills in the use of computers;
- good interpersonal skills including the ability to work with minimal supervision;
- good organizational skills;
- ability to successfully complete the Substitute Orientation;
- conscientiously accept and follow directions;
- adaptability to a variety of situations;
- fundamental understanding of special education students;
- ability to lift;
- in good health;
- adaptability to variety of situations.
The incumbent may be required to use the following skills and abilities during any part of the working day;
Speaking, hearing, manual dexterity (coordination of eye/hand for such activities as typing, calculation, word processing, and other similar activities), bending/stooping, sitting, lifting (up to 50 lbs.). Depending on classroom assignment, some positions will require the ability to provide physical assistance and personal care for students witha variety of disabilities.
Assignments vary by location, program, and individuals being supported. Each Substitute Para will work with students and/or assist others who are working with the exceptional student(s).
RESPONSIBILITIES may include- Assist teachers with daily instruction;
- assist students in achieving their individual objectives;
- assist students toand from the school building and classrooms;
- provide assistance and care in such activities as dressing, eating, drinking, toileting and grooming;
- assist in restraining students;
- tutor students individually and in groups;
- monitor classroom when teacher is otherwise occupied;
- clerical functions;
- under the teacher’s direction may evaluate students work;
- communicate effectively with patrons and students;
- other duties as assigned.
