General Summary Description
The Communications Specialist will support the organization’s mission to deliver high-quality insurance protection and risk management services to its members. This role is responsible for developing, implementing, and managing effective communication strategies that engage members, promote value-added services, and enhance the organization’s visibility and reputation among Kansas counties and municipalities.
Duties / ResponsibilitiesMember Communication: Develop and distribute clear, timely, and relevant communications to member counties and municipalities about coverage, risk management services, claims processes, and organizational updates.
Content Creation: Create engaging content for newsletters, website updates, member news, and educational materials that highlight services, achievements, and best practices in risk management.
Brand Management: Ensure all communications reflect the organization’s values of financial stability, risk minimization, and cooperative action. Maintain consistency in messaging and branding across all platforms.
Event Support: Assist in planning and promoting member engagement activities, educational sessions, and other events that support active member participation and exposure reduction.
Media Relations: Serve as a point of contact for media inquiries and coordinate responses that accurately represent the organization’s mission and activities.
Digital Presence: Manage updates to the organization’s website and member center, ensuring information is current, accessible, and valuable to members.
Feedback and Improvement: Gather feedback from members regarding communication effectiveness and recommend improvements to better meet their needs.

Acts as project lead weekly and leads a work group monthly.

Minimum QualificationsBachelor’s Degree in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, or related field, plus 2 years of experience in content creation, digital communications, or public relations, along with an understanding of, or willingness to learn about, public entity risk pools and local government operations required. 5+ years of experience preferred.

Special Requirements / SkillsValid Driver’s License and Insurance
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite including Outlook, Word, and Excel
Ability to become proficient in Canva, M360, and website management
Working knowledge of commercial insurance or pooling industry preferred
Strong organizational, time management, and presentation skills
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Ability to work collaboratively with a member-driven board, members, business partners, and professional staff
Office environment

Prolonged standing while hosting exhibit at member events
Minimal travel required, up to 5%
