The Part-Time Surveyor is a skilled technical position within the Tooele County Recorder/Surveyor's office. This role requires a strong understanding of surveying principles, practices, and technologies. The Part-Time Surveyor assists in conducting various surveying projects, ensuring the accuracy and integrity of county land records, and supporting the department's technical operations on a part-time basis.
SUPERVISION RECEIVEDWorks under the direction of the County Recorder/Surveyor, the Recorder/Surveyor Director of Operations, and the Senior Field Surveyor. Receives specific assignments and technical guidance while maintaining some independence in carrying out tasks.
SUPERVISION EXERCISEDMay provide guidance and direction to survey technicians or contract surveyors on specific projects as assigned.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Field Surveying Operations- Conduct field surveys, including boundary surveys, topographic surveys, and construction surveys for county properties and infrastructure projects.
- Utilize modern surveying equipment, including total stations, GPS units, and data collectors to gather accurate field data.
- Perform calculations and data processing to convert field measurements into usable survey data and maps.
- Assist in the establishment and maintenance of survey control points and benchmarks throughout the county.
- Analyze survey data, historical records, and legal documents to support boundary determinations and property line establishments.
- Prepare draft survey plats, topographic maps, and other technical drawings using CAD software.
- Assist in the creation and review of legal descriptions for property boundaries and easements.
- Contribute to the maintenance and updating of county survey records and GIS databases.
- Provide technical assistance to other county departments, contractors, and the public regarding survey-related inquiries.
- Assist in the research and retrieval of historical survey records, maps, and legal documents.
- Support the Senior Field Surveyor in quality control processes, checking calculations and draft plats for accuracy.
- Help maintain and calibrate surveying equipment to ensure optimal performance and reliability.
- Contribute to the planning and execution of surveying projects, including assisting with scheduling, resource allocation, and coordination with other team members.
- Prepare field notes, technical reports, and project documentation as required.
- Assist in the development of cost estimates and work plans for surveying projects.
- Ensure all assigned surveying activities comply with state and federal regulations, as well as departmental standards and procedures.
- Stay informed about current surveying technologies, methodologies, and best practices, sharing knowledge with the team as appropriate.
- Assist in the implementation of new technologies and processes to improve efficiency and accuracy in surveying operations.
- Coordinate with GIS staff to ensure proper integration of survey data into the county's geospatial databases.
- Collaborate with other county departments on projects requiring surveying expertise, providing technical input and support as needed.
- Participate in team meetings and contribute to discussions on project planning, problem-solving, and process improvements.
Education and Experience
- Associate's degree in Surveying, Geomatics, Civil Engineering Technology, or a closely related field.
- Bachelor's degree preferred.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in land surveying or a related field.
- Proficiency in CAD software, GIS applications, and specialized surveying software.
- Demonstrated skill in the use of modern surveying equipment, including total stations, GPS units, and data collectors.
- Strong understanding of survey computations, coordinate geometry, and boundary law principles.
- Familiarity with state and federal laws pertaining to land surveying and boundary determination.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail and accuracy.
- Good communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Valid Utah Driver's License and ability to operate 4-wheel drive vehicles in various terrain conditions.
- Land Surveyor Intern (LSI) certification is highly desirable.
- Experience with the Public Land Survey System (PLSS) and its application in Utah is preferred.
- Familiarity with water rights and boundary determination in the western United States is advantageous.
- Tasks require a variety of physical activities, including walking, standing, stooping, climbing, and reaching.
- Ability to lift and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Work is performed in both office and field environments.
- Field work may involve exposure to various weather conditions, rough terrain, and potential safety hazards common to construction sites and undeveloped land.
