An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 6/7 Locum Speech and Language Therapist with a specialization in Head and Neck to join a dynamic team in Tonypandy. The role involves providing specialist speech and language therapy for both inpatients and outpatients, with a focus on dysphagia (swallowing difficulties) and the rehabilitation of patients with head and neck cancer. The position is available for both full-time and part-time hours, with an immediate start and a 3-month duration.

This is a fantastic opportunity to work in a diverse clinical setting and make a meaningful impact on the care of patients with complex needs.

Responsibilities

As a Band 6/7 Speech and Language Therapist, you will be responsible for assessing, diagnosing, and treating patients with dysphagia, specifically those with head and neck cancer or other related conditions. You will manage both inpatient and outpatient caseloads, tailoring interventions to meet individual patient needs. You will provide specialist therapy for patients recovering from head and neck cancer treatments, including surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy, addressing both swallowing and communication difficulties.

You will work closely with the multidisciplinary team to deliver holistic care, including supporting patients in managing their post‑operative recovery and rehabilitation. The role may also involve educating patients and families on managing dysphagia and communication challenges, as well as liaising with other healthcare providers to ensure continuity of care. You will also be expected to keep up‑to‑date with the latest research and best practices in head and neck cancer rehabilitation and swallowing disorders.

Qualifications

and Experience
    egree or equivalent in Speech and Language Therapy
  • HCPC registered Speech and Language Therapist
  • Significant experience in head and neck speech and language therapy, particularly in dysphagia management
  • Experience working with patients with head and neck cancer, including pre- and post‑treatment rehabilitation
  • Ability to assess and treat swallowing and communication difficulties in an acute and rehabilitation setting
  • Experience working with both inpatient and outpatient caseloads
  • Strong knowledge of the effects of head and neck cancer treatments (surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy) on swallowing and communication
  • Ability to work independently and manage a diverse caseload
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development and evidence-based practice
  • Ability to provide education and support to patients and families
