The City of Tomball is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented GIS Coordinator to support the development, maintenance, and expansion of the City's geographic information systems. This role is intended for a skilled GIS professional who brings a solid foundation in GIS concepts and tools, along with supporting IT knowledge, to assist with related technical needs.
The ideal candidate will be a self-starter with the vision and initiative to build, modernize, and shape the City's GIS platform for the future. This includes identifying opportunities for innovation, expanding system capabilities, and delivering meaningful solutions that support planning, engineering, utilities, public safety, and other City functions.
Education and ExperienceAn equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered.
Education:
Bachelor's degree in Geography, GIS, Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
Experience:
3+ years of professional GIS experience preferred. Experience with water, gas, and sewer utility mapping or related infrastructure is a strong plus.
Licensing:
Driver's License.
Functions include but are not limited to the following.
- Create, update, and maintain GIS data layers, maps, and applications for City departments.
- Support the implementation and maintenance of the City's enterprise GIS system.
- Provide GIS analysis and reporting for planning, engineering, utilities, public safety, and other City functions.
- Assist with integrating GIS data with other City systems (asset management, permitting, CAD, etc.).
- Respond to requests for custom maps, data exports, and visualizations.
- Troubleshoot and resolve GIS software and data issues.
- Collaborate with IT staff on related tasks such as database management, data backups, and system integrations.
- Maintain data accuracy, integrity, and compliance with City and state standards.
- Provide GIS and technology support to end users through training and documentation.
- Proactively identify opportunities to improve GIS capabilities and workflows across departments.
- Proficiency with GIS software such as ESRI ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, or similar platforms.
- Understanding of geospatial data formats (shape files, geodatabases, CAD files, etc.).
- Familiarity with SQL databases and basic data management.
- Knowledge of IT concepts such as networking, servers, and cloud applications is a plus.
- Experience with Python scripting, SQL queries, or other automation tools is desirable but not required.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.

- Ability to work collaboratively with multiple departments and stakeholders.
- Self-starter mindset with a strong sense of ownership and initiative.
- Eagerness to build, expand, and shape the City's GIS program to support long-term growth and innovation.
- Experience working in local government or public sector environments.
- Knowledge of asset management systems, CAD software, or integration between GIS and enterprise systems.
- Familiarity with IT service desk support or general technical troubleshooting.
- Hiring Range: $58,822 - $61,763 ($28.28 - $29.69 per hour)
- Salary Range: $58,822 - $88,254
- * Starting salary is dependent on experience and qualifications*
Desktop and laptop workstations, mobile devices (tablets and GPS-enabled field devices), large-format displays, plotters, scanners, and printers;
Geographic Information System (GIS) software and platforms including ESRI ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, and related spatial analysis tools; database and data management systems; GPS and surveying equipment; aerial imagery and LiDAR datasets; CAD and mapping applications; data visualization and reporting tools;
Microsoft Office 365 and collaboration platforms; document management systems; web mapping and dashboard tools; and other software and hardware used to collect, analyze, maintain, and present geospatial data. Familiarity with field data collection equipment, utility mapping systems, and municipal asset management platforms is a plus.

- Work requires visual acuity of 20 feet or more, visual acuity of 20 inches or less, three-dimensional vision, precise hand/eye coordination, the ability to identify and distinguish colors.
- Must be able to lift weights up to 40 lbs.
- Work requires the ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, and/or crawl.
