What You’ll Do

Patrols grounds and buildings on foot and in car, ensures safety of patients, clients, visitors and employees, checks property for open doors, gates, windows, fires or other hazards; assists in emergency or disaster situations (e.g., evacuation of buildings, inclement weather, hospital codes); prevents crimes and enforces laws, rules and regulations; checks identity of persons on grounds and nature of business; monitors traffic conditions and parking facilities to ensure efficient flow of traffic, checks parking permits and issues traffic tickets as necessary;

testifies in court as required. Investigates complaints; conducts searches and patrols area for possible escaped or missing patients and returns them to facility; makes inquiries, documents findings and communicates with hospital administration regarding sensitive issues. Performs a variety of service functions (e.g., responds to codes and emergencies, escorts and assists visitors, assists nursing, medical or direct care personnel in handling or restraining, transporting and checking curfew of patients or clients, assists in opening or starting cars for staff and visitors having mechanical problems, secures patient valuables).

Performs routine administrative duties related to police work (keeps log of security conditions, writes unusual incident reports, answers telephone, relays messages via radio and telephone, files and types reports; assists with fire drills, key control and other safety/security inspections); reviews and keeps up to date with changes in law enforcement and emergency procedures; performs fingerprint scan and facilitates background checks of potential agency staff and contingent workers;

other duties as assigned.

Additional Information

This is an hourly position covered by the State of Ohio Unit 2 bargaining unit (union) with a pay range of #10 on the Unit 2 Pay Range Schedule. Normal working hours are 10 PM – 6 AM. The position is located within the Northwest Behavioral Healthcare Campus at 930 South Detroit Avenue, Toledo, Ohio 43614.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Possession of a certificate having successfully completed an approved basic peace officer training program or completion of 20 years active duty as a peace officer per Section 109.78(D) of Ohio Revised Code.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to successfully perform Ohio Peace Officer Basic Training Program (OPOTC) Fitness Testing Entry Standards for New Recruits.
  • Probationary period is one year.
