The Business Manager at The Maritime Academy of Toledo ensures smooth and compliant operation of school business and administrative affairs. Reporting to the Superintendent and collaborating with the Board and Treasurer, this full-time role oversees budgeting, facilities, operations, and risk, upholding high financial integrity while enabling TMAT's mission-driven maritime education.
Duties & Responsibilities
Leadership & Strategic Participation
● Serve as a key member of TMAT's leadership team, contributing to strategic planning and resource alignment.
● Support policy development, implementation, and compliance with Ohio Revised Code and ODE guidelines.
● Provide ongoing analysis of financial stability, facilities planning, and operational capacity.
Financial Management
● Develop, implement, and monitor the annual operating budget in collaboration with school leadership.
● Oversee accounts payable/receivable, payroll coordination, purchasing, and procurement processes.
● Ensure compliance with Ohio school finance laws, public sector bidding requirements, and federal/state grant regulations.
● Prepare accurate financial reports for the Superintendent, Board, auditors, and ODE.
Operations & Facilities Oversight
● Manage building operations, maintenance schedules, and vendor contracts to ensure safe and efficient facilities.
● Supervise custodial, food service, and non-instructional support staff.
● Coordinate with external contractors for transportation, capital improvements, and facility upgrades.
Risk Management & Safety
● Maintain appropriate insurance policies for liability, workers' compensation, and property coverage.
● Develop and implement risk management practices, emergency protocols, and safety drills in compliance with local/state regulations.
● Ensure proper record-keeping and documentation for compliance and audit readiness.
Communication & Collaboration
● Serve as the primary liaison between the school and external stakeholders regarding business operations.
● Communicate financial updates and facility status clearly to the Superintendent, Board, staff, and community partners.
● Work with auditors, regulators, vendors, and contractors to ensure accountability and transparency.
Professionalism & Continuous Learning
● Uphold professional ethics and confidentiality in all financial and personnel matters.
● Stay current with Ohio Association of School Business Officials (OASBO) standards, policies, and continuing education requirements.
● Promote efficiency, innovation, and fiscal responsibility in school operations.
Additional Responsibilities
● Assist with grants management, compliance reporting, and fundraising financial oversight.
● Provide recommendations for resource reallocation to maximize student success.
● Support school initiatives and special projects as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
Required
● Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Finance, Public Administration, Accounting, or related field.
● Valid Ohio Business Manager license (per ORC §3319.03 and ODEW requirements).
● Completion of state-mandated professional development and continuing education hours.
● Minimum five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in school business, finance, or administrative operations, with at least three (3) in a supervisory or leadership capacity.
● Demonstrated knowledge of public budgeting, procurement, and fund accounting.
● Familiarity with Ohio Revised Code §3319.03 and ODEW school finance regulations.
● Clear BCI/FBI background checks per Ohio school employment standards.
● Strong organizational, analytical, and decision-making skills.
● Excellent written/oral communication and the ability to present financial data clearly to non-financial audiences.
● Ability to supervise, coach, and evaluate support staff effectively.
Preferred
● Master's degree in Business Administration, Educational Finance, or Public Administration (MBA, MPA, or equivalent with a concentration in school finance/administration).
● Valid certification or designation from the Ohio Association of School Business Officials (OASBO) or similar professional body (Treasurer's or Business Manager).
