We are seeking a skilled and motivated Design Engineer to help expand our industry-leading SCADA, Controls, and Networking platform supporting renewable energy systems, including solar PV, energy storage, and wind. This role is ideal for someone who combines strong technical expertise with excellent communication skills and thrives in a fast-paced, project-driven environment.
The Design Engineer will support multiple phases of engineering projects, working both independently and collaboratively under the guidance of the Design Engineering Manager. This position offers the opportunity to contribute directly to innovative renewable energy solutions and play a key role in advancing our technical capabilities.
Key Responsibilities- Develop and maintain design templates for Merit Controls' standard SCADA platform to support the design phase of specific projects with design templates including but not limited the central SCADA/PPC rack, field network enclosures, and meteorological stations, following the guidance of the Design Engineering Manager.
- Implement continuous improvement initiatives for design templates based on engineering best practices, certification guidelines, innovative technologies, and customer feedback.
- Continuously evaluate hardware and design enhancements and provide recommendations for implementation.
- Create CAD drawings for specific projects using the latest design templates while adhering to project timelines.
- Collaborate with internal resources and customers in a timely manner, providing support for past and ongoing projects.
- Adhere to quality management processes in accordance with Merit Controls' ISO 9001 certification.
- Support design-related projects and initiatives across Merit Controls' corporate functions.
- Ensure compliance with Merit Controls' technical standards documentation.
- Work closely with project management to provide updates on project status, identify risks, and propose mitigation measures.
- Assume a leadership role in project design and execution.
- Contribute to the development and deployment of advanced design techniques and methodologies.
- Actively participate in cross-functional teams to drive process improvements and optimize project outcomes.
- Provide technical expertise and support to resolve complex design issues.
Position Requirements
Experience:
- Level I: 0-2 years of relevant technical or engineering experience, including the design of electrical control panels and electrical power schematics.
- Level II: 2-5 years of relevant experience is required. CAD Certification (Auto Desk or equivalent)
- Level III: 5+ years of relevant experience is required. Experience working within renewable energy including industrial or utility scale PV solar, BESS or Wind is preferred. Control panel design certifications (UL508A training, NFPA 70 and 70E, or equivalent)
- Proficiency in 2D CAD software platforms, with AutoCAD experience preferred.
- Knowledge of 3D CAD software platforms is a plus.
- Basic understanding of controls design engineering techniques and practices.
- Familiarity with UL guidelines for Control Panel Design, such as UL508A,NFPA 70, and NFPA 79 (IEC 60204-1), is beneficial.
- Basic understanding of industry standards.
- Knowledge of electrical one-line schematics.
- Basic understanding of power systems, with a willingness to learn more.
- Ability to acquire a basic understanding of PV solar monitoring functions and designs.
- Degree in an Engineering-related field(e.g., Electrical, Mechanical). A Bachelor's degree is preferred.
- Certification in OSHA 10
- Demonstrated ability to work well in collaborative team environment and start-up atmosphere.

- Strong interest in renewable energy, energy storage and their applications.

- Sitting/Standing/Flexibility:
Ability to stand and sit for 8 or more hours when in an office environment. - Speech/Reading:

Ability to lift items weighing up to 25 pounds. - Vision/Hearing:
Ability to understand a variety of instructions furnished in written, verbal, diagram, or schedule form. - Safety:
Ability to understand and communicate safety precautions when necessary.
