POSITION SUMMARY
Under general supervision performs work of routine difficulty in obtaining delinquent city income taxes and returns; performs related work as required.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS- Contacts taxpayers in person, by telephone or through correspondence to obtain tax returns, information and/or payments from current and delinquent taxpayers.
- Traces delinquent taxpayers through investigative methods.
- Assists taxpayers in completion of tax returns and prepares City tax returns as requested.
- Informs taxpayers of tax ordinance and regulations, tax liability and how it was calculated.
- Investigates territory for new business operations.
- Recommends legal action when collection efforts fail.
- Updates and maintains payment plans and statements of delinquency.
- Answers tax questions from the public and works with the public to resolve tax problems.
- Prepares daily work reports.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of
- Provisions of City’s income tax ordinance.
- Federal tax law and preparation of federal tax forms.
- Investigative and collection techniques.
- Accounting and auditing principles.
- MS Word, MS Outlook, and MS Excel.
- Effectively dealing with the public.
- Analyzing tax returns.
- Oral communication – communicating with customers in person or over the telephone.
- Attention to detail.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
- Organize complex data and prepare technical and/or administrative reports.
- Solve problems proactively – review customers’ accounts before they become an issue.
- Graduation from high school or General Educational Development (G.E.D.) Tests equivalency.
- Twelve (12) months of experience in collections, accounts receivables, or tax preparation.
- An Associate’s Degree in Business Technology Accounting, Business, Legal or a closely related field may be substituted for six (6) months of experience.
- Must possess a valid driver's license and be required to use personal car on City business.
