Regular travel to Chesapeake and Virginia Beach. Mileage is reimbursed.

  • Full Time
  • Our offices are open Monday-Friday 7am-5pm – No weekends!

SUMMARY:

An Ophthalmic Technician/Scribe is a valuable asset to an Ophthalmologist, assisting in providing excellent patient care during visits. The employee performs preliminary work‑up of patients, scribe for physicians, and may directly assist with examinations and treatment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Display a professional attitude, greet patients promptly, and thank them upon departure.
  • Anticipate physician needs to facilitate clinic flow.
  • Practice urgency with patients’ and physicians’ time and schedule.
  • Comply with all company policies, procedures, and HIPAA regulations.
  • Interview patients to verify their information.
  • Record patient medical history, current medications, and purpose of visit.
  • Document all data in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR).
  • Check eye conditions by observing pupils, muscles, visual acuity, and extraocular movements.
  • Perform diagnostic tests: dilation, refraction, intraocular pressure, visual fields, OCT, GDX, IOL master, autorefractor, and topography.
  • Demonstrate working knowledge of eye anatomy, diseases, symptoms, and ocular medications.
  • Accurately document medical visits and procedures as performed.
  • Understand basic examination and procedure codes (ICD‑9) for EMR entry.
  • Ensure accurate procedure coding/charges and correct diagnosis codes for all patients.
  • Prepare patients for treatments and minor procedures; measure and record vital signs as required.
  • Open and close exam rooms as needed.
  • Maintain cleanliness and inventory of exam, treatment, laser, and other assigned rooms; keep drug counts up to date.
  • Perform general office duties and cleaning as assigned by manager.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Desire to gain industry knowledge and training.
  • Demonstrate initiative in accomplishing practice goals.
  • Adaptable and open to change.
  • Create a positive work environment through teamwork and patient focus.
  • Interact courteously and professionally with all staff levels.
  • Commit to work over 40 hours when required to meet business needs.
  • Availability to work weekends when applicable.
  • Reliable transportation to travel between multiple work locations with minimal notice.
EDUCATION AND/OR

EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • One year of related experience and/or training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
LICENSES AND CREDENTIALS:
  • Current Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) or Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) certification preferred but not required.
  • Ophthalmic Scribe Certification (OSC) preferred but not required.
SYSTEMS AND TECHNOLOGY:
  • Proficient keyboarding skills and use of EMR and image management system.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook.
  • Quick learner of new applications and computer proficiency.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Frequent walking (75%), sitting (50%), and standing (50%); regular bending, stooping, and reaching (25–50%).
  • Lift, carry, push, and pull items up to 25 lbs.
  • Strong fine motor skills and full use of hands essential for grasping, writing/typing, and technology use.
  • Visual and auditory acuity, including color, depth, peripheral vision, and focusing ability required 100% of the time.
  • Occasional driving or climbing may also be necessary.
