This is skilled mechanical work of the journeyman level in the repair/maintenance of gasoline and diesel powered construction and related public works equipment. Incumbent works under general supervision using independent judgment as to method of repair after receiving oral instructions or written work orders as to the nature of the job, and may direct others during the course of repairs. Work is normally reviewed by the Chief Mechanic.

  • Repairs, overhauls and rebuilds a variety of construction and maintenance equipment with special emphasis on diesel powered and complex public works equipment.
  • Services and overhauls assemblies and accessories, such as single and two speed rear axles; multi-speed transmissions; hydraulic, compressed air, vacuum and electric controls, systems and components.
  • Repairs and overhauls trucks, power shovels, tractors, air compressors, bulldozers, drag lines, graders and other heavy engineering equipment.
  • Performs welding as required.
  • Performs tests to locate defects in operation and to verify work before returning equipment to service.
  • May perform work on small engines and equipment.
  • Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILL

Knowledge of diesel motor construction, design, and repair methods and their use in construction equipment such as graders, rollers and bulldozers. Knowledge of tools/equipment needed for repair of diesel motors and diesel powered construction equipment. Knowledge of hydraulic and electrical systems in diesel powered construction equipment. Knowledge of the principles of operation of both diesel and gasoline fueled internal combustion engines.

Knowledge of safety hazards involved and applicable precautions. Ability to diagnose defects/failures of diesel motors and diesel powered equipment. Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Ability to read blueprints and schematics.

High school graduate or equivalent diploma is required plus three years' experience as an automotive or diesel engine mechanic. A combination of education and experience may be considered.

Must possess a Florida class "E" drivers' license. Driving record will be checked. Must supply own tools.

During occasions of local emergencies this position may be required to report to perform emergency tasks, which may result in extended work hours as well as extended periods of time away from family members. The Incident Commander and the employee's department Head will make the determination as to who will be required to work.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

Requires lift up to 50 pounds with assistance, and/or up to 50 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Must have sufficient physical strength and ability to work long hours outdoors, occasionally under adverse weather conditions. Additional physical abilities required:

  • Speaking:
    Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken English word including the ability to convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately and concisely. Ability to communicate verbally both in person and over the phone.
  • Standing:
    Particularly for sustained periods of time.
  • Stooping:
    Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist. Occurs to a considerable degree and requires full motion of the lower extremities and back muscles.
  • Talking:
    Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word including those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.
  • Visual Acuity:
    Have visual acuity to operate motor vehicles, include close vision, distant vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Walking:
    Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another. Including ability to walk in uneven terrain.
  • Climbing:
    Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized. Enter and work in confined spaces (ie, Packer Body, Service Pit).
  • Feeling:
    Perceiving attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips. Manual dexterity to perform very intricate mechanical repairs.
  • Grasping:
    Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.
  • Handling:
    Picking, holding, or otherwise working, primarily with the whole hand. Must be able to use hand and power tools required for performance of assigned duties.
  • Hearing:
    Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction. Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make the discrimination in sound.
  • Kneeling:
    Bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees.
