Purpose

The Safety and Training Supervisor is responsible for leading and supporting the implementation of the site’s safety and training strategies in alignment with company values, legal obligations, and risk management best practices. This role ensures that safety programs, competency development, emergency preparedness, and regulatory compliance systems are effectively delivered and continuously improved. The Supervisor plays a key role in strengthening the Internal Responsibility System (IRS) and embedding a proactive safety culture across all levels of the organization.

Responsibilities
  • Leadership and Oversight
  • Coach and direct Safety Advisors, Training Specialist and Field Trainers; set goals, monitor performance and foster professional growth.
  • Represent the department during regulatory inspections, audits and executive reviews.
Safety and Risk Prevention
  • Approve and prioritize inspection, audit and risk-assessment; verify close-out of actions.
  • Participate in investigations of high potential occurrences, ensuring investigation methodologies are applied.
  • Oversee industrial-hygiene programs including gravimetric dust sampling and noise testing.
  • Supervise the Radiation Safety Officer to ensure CNSC license conditions, leak tests and reporting are met.
  • Monitor and improve the effectiveness of the Internal Responsibility System (IRS).
  • Review and improve hazard mitigation for high-risk activities.
  • Support risk assessments for non-routine or high-risk work activities.
  • Provide regular safety performance updates and recommend corrective actions to leaders.
  • Act as a technical resource for health and safety matters for all employees and the JHSC.
  • Liaise with industry partners, safety networks (e.g., WSN), and regulators to stay informed on evolving safety standards.
Contractor and Change Management
  • Participate in Management of Change (MOC) reviews to assess safety impacts of equipment, process, or staffing changes.
  • Assist in safety-by-design processes for infrastructure and operational changes.
Training and Competency
  • Oversee the learning management system (LMS), ensure records are current and Ministry-reportable.
  • Ensure in-house trainers are authorized for the material they deliver.
  • Validate the structure and quality of specialty and in-house training.
  • Identify new training needs stemming from regulatory change, equipment upgrades or incident needs.
  • Validate the Signing Authority Program, audit promote education and understanding of the IRS and site-specific safety procedures.
  • Collaborate with the Training Specialist and/or Field Trainer to ensure training programs are compliant, effective and job-relevant.
  • Validate training records and certifications to ensure legal and operational readiness.
  • Observe job tasks to assess and support worker competency development.
  • Provide field-based coaching, mentoring, and feedback on safe work practices.
Emergency Preparedness
  • Support Underground Mine Rescue or Emergency Response program.
  • Schedule team training and First Aid.
  • Oversee monthly unit checks and gas-detection calibration.
Data, Reporting and Communication
  • Analyze leading/lagging indicators, issue dashboards and strategic insights to leadership.
  • Communicate safety and training priorities through pre-start and safety meetings.
Training and Education
  • Minimum Grade 12 education; post-secondary diploma in Occupational Health & Safety or related field preferred.

  • Valid Ontario driver’s license.

  • 7 to 10 years of mining (surface, mill, or underground) experience.

  • Minimum 5 years of Occupational Health & Safety experience in mining or heavy industry.
