Job Description
The Estimator is responsible for developing accurate and detailed cost estimates to support project planning, budgeting, and execution. Working with engineering, construction, and project stakeholders, the Estimator analyzes project scope, gathers pricing, evaluates risks, and monitors cost performance throughout the project lifecycle.
Key Responsibilities
Prepare detailed project budget and estimate breakdown documents
Work with a multi-disciplinary team to understand scope, phases of work, and project timelines
Conduct field assessments with construction and engineering teams to identify risks, hazards, and interferences
Develop Work Breakdown Structures (WBS) by area, discipline, and activity
Obtain technical information, pricing, availability, and delivery schedules from contractors and suppliers
Establish cost bases and classify estimate levels for project activities
Create and maintain the project Chart of Accounts within the ERP system
Calculate contingencies, indirect costs, and escalation/inflation factors
Prepare planned monthly cash flow forecasts and spend vs. commitment reports
Identify and report estimate risks and opportunities
Maintain databases tracking actual costs and labour hours per activity
Update estimates using actual costs and revised quotations, and analyze trends and variances
Assist in the evaluation and comparison of contractor estimates and bid submissions
Skills & Qualifications
Experience in cost estimating within construction, mining, or industrial projects
Strong understanding of budgeting, cost analysis, and forecasting principles
Ability to interpret engineering drawings, technical documents, and specifications
Proficiency in Excel and cost tracking/ERP systems
Strong analytical, mathematical, and problem-solving skills
Excellent organizational and communication abilities
Ability to coordinate with engineers, planners, contractors, and project stakeholders
Working Relationships
Works closely with project managers, engineers, planners, procurement teams, and contractors to ensure estimates are accurate, risks are identified, and project costs are effectively forecasted and controlled.
