Amgen Science Fellow - Computational Biology, AI, and Advanced Computing

What you will do

Let's do this. Let's change the world. The Amgen Science Fellows program is seeking an exceptional early-career scientist to establish an independent research program at the intersection of drug discovery, computational biology, artificial intelligence, and emerging computational paradigms, including quantum computing.

This fellowship will support the development and application of advanced computational methods to address foundational challenges in biology, chemistry, and/or therapeutic discovery. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to, machine learning and AI for biological inference and molecular design, large-scale computational and systems biology, hybrid AI-physics-based modeling, and exploratory quantum and quantum-inspired approaches for simulation, optimization, and learning. The Fellow will have the opportunity to define a forward-looking research agenda that advances computational science as a core driver of next-generation biopharmaceutical R&D.

The Amgen Science Fellows program is a key component of Amgen Research's mission to advance scientific knowledge and train future scientific leaders. The program offers exceptionally talented scientists the opportunity to establish their own research programs as an alternative to traditional postdoctoral positions. The program is designed to encourage creative and independent research in both basic and translational science.

Recent Ph.D. graduates with superb research records receive resources to work independently with the guidance of a highly distinguished mentoring committee. The Amgen Science Fellows program builds upon the success of the Amgen R&D postdoc program to recruit the highest caliber talent to Amgen. The Amgen Science Fellows program will offer an attractive and differentiated opportunity for extraordinary early career scientists to pursue their cutting-edge ideas at Amgen.

Science Fellows take advantage of Amgen's state-of-the-art research facilities, as well as the supportive environment of the global Amgen Research community. Science Fellows will dedicate their time at Amgen to developing a robust research project aimed at breakthrough discoveries and publication. They have the distinctive opportunity to initiate and manage an independent project with technical support under their direction, a rare experience typically encountered later in one's career.

Science Fellows are given the space, guidance, and resources needed to run their research program. Unlike traditional industry positions, the Science Fellows are not expected to work on pipeline programs.

The Science Fellow will have an appointment up to 4-years.

What we expect of you

We are all different, yet we all use our unique contributions to serve patients. The Postdoc professional we seek is qualified with these qualifications.

Basic Qualifications:

* Ph.D. in a computational or life sciences discipline with research experience in Computational Biology, AI, and Advanced Computing

Preferred Qualifications:

Scientific Depth and Originality

* Demonstrated record of first-author or corresponding-author publications in high-impact journals at the intersection of computation and life sciences

* Evidence of independent scientific vision, such as leading a distinct research direction separate from PhD or advisor-driven programs

* Experience framing and pursuing long-horizon, high-risk scientific questions rather than incremental method development

Computational and Technical Expertise

* Advanced proficiency in modern machine learning architectures (e.g., graph neural networks, foundation models, generative models) applied to biological or chemical data

* Strong programming skills with evidence of production-quality code or open-source contributions

* Experience working with large-scale, multimodal biological datasets (omics, imaging, molecular, clinical, or simulation-derived)

* Familiarity with high-performance computing environments, cloud-based…
