Basic Function

Under the direction of the Dean, Department Chair, or Program Director, the Adjunct Faculty Member is responsible for providing academic instruction to students for the assigned undergraduate and/or graduate courses.

Representative Duties
  • Provide academic instruction through lecture, lab, or performance courses; assess and develop cognitive abilities, communication skills, and higher‑order thinking skills through appropriate assignments in one‑on‑one, classroom, and distance‑mediated instructional settings.
  • Advise students on programs of study, other institutions, lifelong learning resources, and effective study skills; refer to support services and professionals as appropriate.
  • Observe and evaluate student performance relative to course objectives and learning outcomes through assignments, projects, discussions, and examinations; provide timely feedback and respond to inquiries in class, online, or during office hours.
  • Plan and organize instruction according to approved course outlines and learning outcomes to maximize student learning in alignment with departmental and university mission goals; implement student performance objectives listed on the official course outline of record.
  • Maintain accurate records of enrollment, attendance, academic progress, curriculum, and learning outcomes; prepare and submit data and reports related to course and student progress promptly.
  • Evaluate and select instructional materials (textbooks, manuals, software, tools) in collaboration with discipline faculty; order materials per campus bookstore procedures for timely delivery.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

  • Current theory and practice within the subject discipline.
  • Principles and best practices of effective teaching.
Ability To
  • Demonstrate thorough and accurate knowledge in the subject field or discipline.
  • Deliver course curricula in various learning styles.
  • Exhibit sensitivity to diverse academic, social, economic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of university students.
  • Exhibit sensitivity to the needs of students with disabilities.
  • Integrate current and emerging instructional delivery technologies to enhance teaching and the educational experience.
  • Maintain professional standards that protect student confidentiality.
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, using tact, patience, and courtesy.
Minimum Qualifications

Possession of a master’s degree from a graduate institution of recognized standing or equivalent experience and professional recognition.

Preferred Qualifications

Ph.D. completed or in progress, in the candidate’s specialty in the field of Religion.

Physical Abilities

Manual dexterity to operate office equipment; speaking to exchange information, provide instruction, and make presentations; sitting or standing for extended periods; pushing, pulling, or lifting light objects; bending and reaching to store and/or retrieve files.

Working Environment

Indoor classroom environment; subject to visiting a variety of classroom sites on campus.

Hiring Range

$32‑$34.50 an hour.
