Overview

Searching for an interesting summer internship opportunity? This internship is a 9-12 week program designed to provide sophomore or junior year college students or college graduates with plans to attend graduate school in the fall with unique hands-on and varied drinking water treatment experiences. We are looking for enthusiastic individuals who can work independently with a hunger to learn and drive to produce useful results.

Under guidance of the water treatment process specialist and the immediate supervision of the water plant supervisor, the intern performs a variety of tasks within the Water Treatment Division. Students and recent graduates with water treatment related work and educational experience are preferred, but having an interest in process engineering and/or water treatment and active enrollment in courses leading to a career in process engineering and/or the water field will suffice.

Salary
  • Intern I $15.65 - $20.66/hr
  • Intern II $18.58 - $24.53/hr
  • Intern III $23.53 - $31.06/hr

Internship Details

Job Summary Details
  • Provides process engineering support to improve plant water treatment processes. Works on semi-defined projects including work on ultrafiltration (UF) pilot studies, clarifier and UF process monitoring including data collection/trending/analysis, jar testing with and without particle size analysis and zeta potential measurement, filterability/Silt Density Index measurement, and biofiltration plant process monitoring.
  • Completes assigned research, filing, typing or other projects in a timely manner and with required documentation at times with minimal direction.
  • Gathers data and related information for projects and presents to team.
  • Performs data analysis and reporting on assigned projects.
  • Develops automated data reports.
  • Enters data into spreadsheets and produces reports in various formats for review.
  • Operates office equipment such as copy machines, calculators and computer software to produce end reports and copies.
  • Modifies and develops Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Conducts daily inspections and monitors operations of drinking water plant facilities and equipment. Learns how to combine various data elements to make necessary changes to achieve optimal water treatment goals and provide safe and adequate treated water supply.
  • Learns how to, but does not operate Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) computer system; monitors screens and alarms.
  • Observes variations in operating conditions by interpreting SCADA graphical trends as well as water quality test results. Performs collection of water samples and related laboratory tests. Documents readings and results.
Education/Experience
  • Intern I:
    No experience necessary.
  • Intern II:
    High school diploma or GED plus six months  experience in specific department or progress toward completion of a bachelor s degree in a related field.
  • Intern III:
    Bachelor s degree plus one year of experience in specific department or progress toward completion of a master s degree in a related field.
Licensing/Certification Requirements

May need the ability to travel to various locations in a timely manner as the job requires.
