The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) Northern Region Highways and Aviation is looking for an Equipment Operator Journey 2 in THOMPSON PASS to help us Keep Alaska Moving!

• Operates and services heavy and light‑duty equipment for the year‑round maintenance of state highways and airports, including snow removal, grading, and material hauling.
• Maintains vegetation, signs, bridges, culverts, drainage structures, bike paths, and road surfaces within the State Right‑of‑Way.
• Performs traffic control duties such as flagging and may serve as a lead, completing daily entries in the Maintenance Management System (MMS).
• Conducts equipment upkeep, welding, cutting, and general maintenance tasks as needed.
• Operates various specialized equipment including graders, loaders, dozers, dump trucks, snow blowers, semi‑trucks, and steam boilers for maintenance and repair operations.

Working in Thompson Pass offers a one‑of‑a‑kind experience surrounded by Alaska’s most dramatic mountain scenery. Located just outside Valdez, this area is known for its record‑breaking snowfall, rugged peaks, and breathtaking views of glaciers and alpine terrain. Once a key route for miners and traders, Thompson Pass now plays a vital role in keeping one of Alaska’s most scenic and challenging highways open year‑round.

As an Equipment Operator here, you’ll take pride in maintaining critical transportation routes while living and working in an environment that embodies Alaska’s adventurous spirit and natural beauty.

This is a full‑time seasonal position located in Thompson Pass, Alaska, within the Valdez District. Expect a dynamic, fast‑paced environment with varied responsibilities and conditions. You’ll work independently and as part of a team, often in challenging weather or terrain. Shift work and emergency responses are part of the role, and safety is a priority. Our supportive team and ongoing training ensure you have the tools to succeed in any situation.
