Water Safety Instructor - Swim Instructor
Summary of Duties (Water Safety Instructor)Under the general supervision of the Aquatics Program Coordinator, the Water Safety Instructor will instruct the multi-level American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim program for participants with a variety of skills and abilities from 6 months of age to adults. Responsible for providing aquatic learning in, on and around the water environment, while ensuring the safety of class participants and assisting with facility operations.
Other duties may include providing customer service and interfacing with other Township employees and residents.
Under the general supervision of the Recreation Specialist for Learn to Swim and the Aquatics Program Coordinator, the Head Water Safety Instructor will monitor and instruct multi-level American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim program for participants with a variety of skills and abilities from 6 months of age and older. Other duties include monitoring the Water Safety Instructors during work hours and providing customer service and interfacing with other Township employees and residents.
The Head Water Safety Instructor may participate in the interviewing, hiring, and training process of Water Safety Instructors, to include planning, assigning, and directing work, appraising performance, addressing complaints, and resolving problems, and informing the Aquatics Program Coordinator of any employee relations issues. This position is a temporary seasonal position.
- Instruct American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Program while working outdoors and with children of all ages.
- Plan and manage classes, teach skills at the appropriate swimmer level, complete skill checklist and submit to Head Water Safety Instructor for class reporting.
- Ensure the safety of class participants by teaching and monitoring proper pool safety procedures.
- Provide customer service and communicate effectively with residents by addressing and resolving complaints and concerns by responding to questions and inquiries, answering the telephone, directing incoming callers, documenting phone messages, and providing information and guidance to residents on swimming classes.
- Required to work a flexible schedule, to include early mornings, days, evenings, and weekends.
- Required to work morning and evening group lessons anytime from 8:00am to 12:00pm and 5:15pm to 8:00pm.
- Private lessons are optional from 10:30am to 4:30pm. Private lessons must be scheduled by the Water Safety Instructor and work around the pool schedule and group lesson schedule.
- Conduct oneself in a professional manner and exercise diligence in adhering to the procedures that ensure a safe and effective swim lesson program.
- Must be available to work 35 to 40 hours per week. Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work hours is essential.
- Required to attend all orientation meetings and trainings.
- Must be able to work under pressure.
- Wear prescribed uniform.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Illustrate safe procedures for teaching lessons and ensure consistent instruction according to American Red Cross and The Woodlands Township policies and procedures and evaluating Water Safety Instructors.
- Oversee Learn-to-Swim Program activities by ensuring instructors start and end classes as scheduled, handle participant and parent concerns if needed, observe the Water Safety Instructors to ensure they are following proper procedure and responding to employee and resident concerns and inquiries and aiding when appropriate or requested.
- Communicate effectively with the Learn-to-Swim Recreation Specialist and parents/participants in swim lessons and aquatic programs for their assigned facility.
- Observe lessons and move participants to the correct level as needed.
- Assist with teaching classes and provide coaching and training to Water Safety Instructors on lesson plans, skills needed, where in the facility to hold class, make corrections as needed, and ensure the safety of class participants by teaching and monitoring proper pool safety procedures.
- Assist the Learn-to-Swim Recreation Specialist with scheduling sessions, staff, and making changes to the schedule when needed.
- Interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Write routine reports and correspondence, complete audits, effectively communicate with staff when completing write-up forms, and speak effectively before groups of participants or employees of the organization.
- Conduct oneself in a professional manner and exercise diligence in adhering to the procedures that ensure a safe and effective swim lesson program.
