Home Health Aide/Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) – VITAS Healthcare
The VITAS Home Health Aide (HHA) is a non‑exempt employee, trained to provide personal care and services to hospice patients, augmenting care given by family members or other caregivers.
Salary Range: $17 – $21 per hour.
AssignedJob Responsibilities
- Perform only those personal care activities contained in a written assignment.
- Assist the patient to maintain good personal hygiene.
- Plan and prepare meals; feed or assist with feeding when needed.
- Assist with ambulation.
- Assist with treatments ordered by the physician and taught by the nurse, including change of colostomy bag, use of walker or wheelchair, dressing reinforcement, prescribed ROM exercises, ice cap or collar use, measure intake and output of fluids, and assist with uncomplicated medications.
- Read and record temperature, pulse, and respiration.
- Maintain a safe and healthy environment.
- Promote the patient’s mental alertness through participation in activities of interest.
- Provide simple emotional and psychological support to the patient, family, and other caregivers.
- Report changes in the patient’s mental or physical condition or home situation to the VITAS Nurse and interdisciplinary team.
- Teach basic personal care to the primary caregiver.
- Practice basic infection control measures.
- Observe, report, and document patient status and care provided.
- Complete at least 12 hours of in‑service training per calendar year.
- Handle other tasks as assigned.
- May not be assigned to an institutional setting.
- May not change sterile dressings, irrigate body cavities, irrigate a colostomy or wound, perform gastric lavage or gavage, catheterize a patient, administer medications, apply heat, care for a tracheotomy tube, suction a patient, or provide any personal care not assigned by the VITAS nurse or included in the plan of care.
- High school graduate or equivalent preferred.
- Meets personnel qualifications of a Home Health Aide as specified in 42 C.F.R. §484.4 and §484.36.
- Documented evidence of 75 hours of training per 42 C.F.R. §§484.36(a)(1).
- Documented evidence of successful completion of a competency evaluation program per 42 C.F.R. §484.36(b).

- Ability to read, write, and follow directions.
- Ability to travel per job requirements.
- Telephone available in the home.

- Assist in lifting and transferring patients as required.
- Lift objects exceeding 20 pounds.
- Stand or walk for in excess of one hour per day.
- Communicate verbally and hear.
- Perform regular sitting, stooping, kneeling, and crouching.
- Have accurate close and distance vision, and ability to adjust focus.
- Reports directly to the VITAS Nurse and receives clinical direction from the VITAS Nurse.
