Salary and Work InformationSalary Plan/Grade:
Transport Maint Crew Chief: $51,158 – $81,351 per year. Pay Basis:

- Lead a crew of transportation maintenance technicians and equipment operators, performing skilled maintenance activities.
- Assist during accidents and emergency weather situations to sand bridges and roads, and put up warning signs; organize the response of crews.
- Assist in the administration of the maintenance section and report unusual issues to the supervisor.
- Inspect roads while en route to and from job sites and report problems to supervisors.
- Maintain records on materials and equipment used, and employee time sheets.
- Operate light and heavy equipment.
- Oversee contract workers and coordinate applicable activities.
- Perform maintenance and repair on equipment and train crew members on equipment use.
- Schedule daily work assignments; serve as a resource for complex questions and troubleshooting; present operational updates to the supervisor; provide input on team members' career conversations; and approve leave requests to ensure operational coverage.
- Perform other job responsibilities as assigned.
- High School Graduate or Equivalent in general education.
- 5 years experience in roadway maintenance related work (full‑time or prorated part‑time). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year‑per‑year basis.
- Valid driver's license; must drive a state vehicle.
- Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or to obtain a Class "A" CDL within 120 calendar days of employment.
- Knowledge of methods, procedures, equipment, and materials used in intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance work;
Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices; incident management procedures. - Proficient skills in performing calculations to include material and labor estimates, technical survey data, and engineering calculations; leading, assigning, reviewing, and monitoring the work of others; coordinating labor, materials, and equipment; prioritizing and organizing work assignments; training in a classroom, office, or field environment; maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing; to delegate tasks and decisions; share authority but hold ultimate accountability.
- Subject to environmental conditions; limited protection from weather. May experience extreme cold and heat (below 32°F or above 100°F for more than one hour).
