TxDOT's Leakey Maintenance Section is looking for an independent worker to join the team as an Equipment Mechanic I or II. The role focuses on maintaining and repairing fleet vehicles and heavy equipment used in construction of highways and bridges, as well as assisting with roadway maintenance tasks.

Pay Basis:
Yearly (FLSA Status: Nonexempt)
Minimum Salary: $40,918.00
Maximum Salary: $71,055.00

Essential Duties for Equipment Mechanic I- Adjust brakes and replace brake system parts, including air brake and anti‑locking systems.
- Handle and dispose of environmentally hazardous materials per federal and state regulations.
- Check lighting and wiring to ensure proper functioning of headlights, spotlights, tail lights, and parking lights.
- Complete repair order paperwork and accurately enter data into the fleet information management system.
- Maintain and repair heavy equipment used in highway and bridge construction, and in maintenance of infrastructure.
- Order, pick up, and deliver parts, materials, tools, and operate equipment and vehicles, including heavy equipment.
- Perform preventive maintenance, inspections, and repairs on motor vehicles and equipment, moving related items as required.
- Troubleshoot, test, and repair electrical systems, electronic ignitions, and fuel injection systems.
- Perform other job responsibilities as assigned.
- Analyze and interpret computerized diagnostic equipment information.
- Perform quality assurance/analysis on repaired vehicles and equipment.
Experience:
• Equipment Mechanic I: 2 years in automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair (full‑time Kuyà or prorated part‑time equivalence).
• Equipment Mechanic II: 4 years in the same field.
- Associate’s degree in Automotive and/or Diesel Technology substitutes for 2 years of experience.
- Certificates of course completion from a Technical Training Institute may substitute for experience on a year‑for‑year basis.
Licenses and
Certifications:
• Valid driver’s license at application time, require dips a Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). Must obtain a Class “A” CDL within 180 calendar days of employment.
- Considerable knowledge of mechanical equipment operation and maintenance.
- Proficiency with basic vehicle mechanics, maintenance, and repair procedures.
- Troubleshooting, repairing, and calibrating electronic and mechanical components.
- Usage of hand and power tools and mechanical devices.
- Repair procedures for diesel, gasoline, CNG, and LPG engines.
- Brake repairs covering anti‑locking, mechanical, air, and hydraulic brake systems.
- Diagnosing problems and repairing equipment per defined codes and specifications.
- Reading and interpreting electrical diagrams and schematics.
- Safe work practices, including protective gear use.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word).
- Work in indoor and outdoor environments, noise, and hazardous conditions.
- Wear protective gear (respirator, hard hat, etc.).
- Lift up to 50 lbs; frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs.
- Crouch, bend, crawl, reach, and stand for prolonged periods.
- Hearing and visual acuity for inspection of small defects and operating vehicles.
- Substantial repetitive wrist, hand, and finger movements.
- Pre‑employment physical required.
- Must pass a drug test; this is a Safety Impact position and subject to random drug testing.
- Must be able to report for duty within 60 minutes of notification on a 24‑hour basis for emergency response.
