The City of Wylie is seeking Equipment Operator I applicants within Public Works. The selected applicant will perform manual labor and related work as required. Supervision is provided by the appropriate supervisor, based upon assigned department.

Work Schedule

Staff in Public Works work four ten‑hour days, Monday through Thursday. Closed on Friday.

Responsibilities
  • Keeps work areas clean. Cleans, maintains, and services tools and equipment.
  • Loads and unloads materials and equipment.
  • Reads, understands, and follows written and oral job instructions, plans, maps, and drawings.
  • Submits written reports legibly and completely.
  • Creates reports using the Public Works software system.
  • Hears clearly when working around equipment and in traffic.
  • Uses proper safety precautions when performing all tasks. Exercises good judgment to work safely and use equipment properly. Operates vehicles according to rules of safety and laws of the State of Texas. Follows safety regulations, City and department policies and procedures.
  • Presents a clean and well‑groomed appearance.
  • Operates a motor vehicle in carrying out the business of the department and the City.
  • Able and willing to work outside in all kinds of weather.
  • Communicates effectively with co‑workers.
  • Subject to after‑hours call‑out for emergency situations, as defined by supervisor.
  • Sets up barricades when and where needed for the safety of employees and the public.
  • Completes work orders, including turning in completed forms on a daily basis.
  • Performs as a responsible steward of the public trust and strives for excellence in public service, enhancing the quality of life for all.
  • Acts in a civil, respectful manner at all times to management, co‑workers and others.
  • Other duties as may be assigned.
When Assigned to Streets
  • Participates in all phases of street, drainage and alley maintenance, repair and construction.
  • Uses hand saw, skill saw, chain saw, drill press, bolt cutter, pick axe, air compressor, jackhammer, cutting torch, and various weight hammers.
When Assigned to Water or Wastewater
  • Works effectively with other crew members to repair or replace water or sewer service lines, water or sewer mains.
  • Makes water or wastewater taps.
  • Installs and/or repairs fire hydrants.
  • Unstops sewer lines.
  • Installs clean‑outs in sewer lines.
Qualifications

High School Diploma or equivalent. Valid Driver's License. Must have Texas Driver's License within 60 days of hire. Preferred experience varies based on division assignment. Completion of National Incident Management System (NIMS) training courses as outlined by Emergency Management.

Specific Licenses and Certifications When Assigned To Parks

Possession of a Texas Certified Chemical Applicator’s License preferred (issued by the Texas Department of Agriculture in lawn/ornamental and weed control).

When Assigned To Signals
  • Must have the ability to obtain and maintain the following within one year:
    Class “A” CDL with no restrictions except “A”, IMSA Level I Certification, Pavement Marking Level I, TMUTCD Work Zone Safety Certification, Bucket truck certification preferred.
When Assigned To Stormwater
  • Must have the ability to obtain and maintain the following within one year:
    Class “A” CDL with no restrictions except “A”, TMUTCD Work Zone Safety Certification, NPDES Certified Stormwater Inspector preferred.
