Overview

TxDOT’s Abilene District is recruiting student interns for the Student Highway Maintenance Tech position in Anson, TX (2503624). These internships, primarily covering May through August, may extend throughout the year depending on schedule and availability.

Interns must be enrolled in high school or any institution of higher education, including trade/vocational schools, either in person or online. The role offers valuable work experience and a possible pathway to a future career with TxDOT.

Position Details

Minimum Salary: $18.00 per hour. Maximum Salary: $18.00 per hour.

Pay Basis:
Hourly.

Yes, 25% of the time.

Responsibilities
  • Assists in repairing and erecting signs and repairing drums and/or barricades.
  • Assists in warehousing and supply functions.
  • Assists with repairs to potholes, roadway shoulders and edges, guardrails, signs, and other related work.
  • Assists with traffic control, including placing and gathering cones, flagging traffic, and other related work.
  • Operates light equipment (must be at least 18 years of age and have a valid driver's license).
  • Maintains picnic and rest areas, rights‑of‑way, maintenance yards, and comfort stations.
  • Moves and picks up litter and roadway debris.
  • Performs minor maintenance and repairs on equipment.
  • Performs plant and landscape maintenance including trimming trees, brush, mowing, fertilizing, and watering.
  • Performs some carpentry work.
  • Performs some clerical duties.
  • Repairs and installs posts and mailbox supports.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Must be a student in high school or any institution of higher education, including trade/vocational schools.
  • No experience required; experience may be satisfied by full‑time or prorated part‑time equivalent.
  • Must be at least 16 years of age and currently enrolled in high school or higher education.
  • Employees at least 18 years of age with a valid driver's license may be assigned driving duties and may use power tools.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Subject to environmental conditions; protection from weather but not temperature changes.
  • Subject to outside environmental conditions; no effective weather protection.
  • Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions.
  • Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour.

  • Subject to hazards-moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places/heat, or chemicals.
  • Subject to atmospheric conditions-fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, poor ventilation.
  • Subject to air and/or skin exposure to oils and other cutting fluids.
  • Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device.
  • Works frequently in small/crawl spaces; manholes; areas that can cause claustrophobia.
  • Works in narrow aisles or passageways.
  • Sedentary work:
    Lift up to 10 lbs. at a time and occasionally carry files/small tools.
  • Light work:
    Lift up to 20 lbs. at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 10 lbs.
  • Medium work:
    Lift up to 50 lbs. at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs.
  • Climbing - ascending/descending ladders, stairs, scaffoldings, ramps, etc.
  • Balancing-walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling.
