Responsibilities
  • Maintain high level service by troubleshooting and diagnosing malfunctions in the Headend, HFC and fiber optic networks, and the Home Terminal Units.
  • Repair local plant performance issues and customer‑owned equipment, using electronic test equipment.
  • Read and interpret system/network design maps; verify as‑built documentation; compare field findings with existing documentation; report findings following company standard process.
  • Splice and/or terminate coaxial and fiber optics cables, mount active and passive devices, both aerial and underground (cabinets and vaults), activate active devices and test to ensure optimal performance of all equipment in the HFC/fiber optic plant to company, manufacturer, and design specifications.
  • Perform surveys to determine if customer‑requested locations are capable of receiving service; create maps/drawings as necessary to assist in estimating costs for plant/drop extensions if location is beyond acceptable distance from existing plant.
  • Perform underground facility locates accurately using plant maps and electronic locating equipment to prevent cable damage and service interruptions.
  • Perform construction maintenance duties: splice aerial/underground coaxial and/or fiber optic cables and equipment to restore cable plant to system specification; splice and activate new coaxial plant; repair and/or replace damaged aerial/underground plant; inspect, repair and/or replace power supplies.
  • Continuously monitor plant for ingress/egress and perform signal leakage ride‑out activities, track and repair signal leakage as necessary.
  • Train system technical personnel as directed by local system management.
Qualifications
  • One‑year certificate from college or technical school; or three to four years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Must successfully complete Sparklight Technical Training Center Advanced Technician course within 6 months of accepting position.
  • Working knowledge of signal level meters, volt‑ohm meters (VOM), leakage detection equipment, time domain reflectometer (TDR), optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR) and other related test equipment.
  • Knowledgeable of rules and regulations of various regulatory bodies impacting the operation of a telecommunications system including, but not limited to, FCC, NEC, NESC, OSHA, and DOT, as well as all local ordinances.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license of the state in which the individual is employed.
  • Ability to work a variable schedule and respond to service interruptions during regular business hours, shift work or when on‑call. Must be available to work overtime including weekends, evenings, and holidays as required.
