Position: Public Works Technician I
Location: Richland Hills

Under general supervision, employees in this position will perform a wide variety of general labor and maintenance of city streets, water, wastewater, and drainage infrastructure in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures. This may include heavy manual labor, operating light and heavy equipment and participating in utilities field activities in a safe and effective manner. This position will assist with other public works related activities and tasks as required.

Technician

I (Entry Level)
  • Performs maintenance and repairs on water/sewer mains, fire hydrants, water services, water meters, streets, drainage, and infrastructure.
  • Routinely cleans and maintains assigned vehicles, tools, and equipment. Inspect and check operation of vehicles, tools, and equipment before and after use, report problems to supervisor and perform minor equipment maintenance as needed.
  • Moves various equipment and tools to and from work trucks, loading, and unloading.
  • Executes safe and effective methods in all field activities which includes following departmental and city safety guidelines and attending required training when necessary.
  • Interacts professionally and respectfully with the public, coworkers, and others in the course of daily work.
  • Maintains integrity, professionalism, values, and goals of the city by assuring that all rules and regulations are followed, and that accountability and public trust are preserved.
  • Performs routine landscaping.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Daily, on time attendance is required. Overtime, weekend and holiday on-call availability is required.
  • Obtain successful qualification to progress to Technician level II within one year is required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE
  • Ability to learn general safety practices, City rules, codes, and instruction on proper use of equipment.
  • Ability to learn occupational hazards and safety precautions.
  • Knowledge of basic math calculations and concepts.
  • Knowledge of construction, related materials, and tools.
  • Knowledge of basic computer and smartphone functions/practices.
REQUIRED ABILITIES
  • Ability to learn to repair water and wastewater infrastructure such as water and sewer mains, fire hydrants, water meters, and service lines.
  • Ability to be cross trained to assist in street, water, wastewater, drainage, and other public works divisions.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions to complete an assigned task.
  • Ability to demonstrate intrinsic motivation, high ethical and moral standards.
  • Ability to work and communicate with the public and co-workers.
  • Ability to work in a team environment, contribute as a team member, and treat co-workers and customers with respect.
  • Physical ability and coordination to accomplish assigned tasks.
  • Ability to learn to safely operate city vehicles such as service trucks, flatbed trucks, and other automatic transmission vehicles.
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical labor, including standing, bending, stooping, lifting, reaching, twisting, squatting, standing, and walking for extended periods of time in adverse conditions, including extreme heat, cold, moisture, dust, and fumes, at various heights, and in confined spaces.
  • Ability to work any day of the week and extended hours.
  • Ability to clear a post-offer physical, drug test, criminal background, and other appropriate testing and requirements.
  • Ability to learn and complete essential functions of the position and successfully complete probationary period.
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
  • Requires a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Some manual labor experience or construction trades experience.
  • A valid Texas Class C Operator’s Driver's License is required.
  • Class “D” Water Distribution Certificate or Class I Wastewater collection license desired, or obtained within 12 months from date of hire.
