Job Title: Bus Mechanic

Wage/Hour Status: Non-Exempt

Reports to: Director of Transportation

Pay Grade: Transportation 3

Primary

Purpose:

Perform major and minor mechanical repairs with minimal supervision to ensure proper performance and safety of district vehicles. Follow established policies and procedures in your work.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:
  • Valid Texas commercial driver’s license with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements or ability to obtain immediately.
  • ASE and/or TASBT Certification preferred.
  • Certified Texas Vehicle Safety Inspector and DOT Safety Inspector or ability to obtain.
Special Knowledge/Skills:
  • Knowledge of diesel and gasoline engine maintenance and repair.
  • Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to pass U.S. Department of Transportation alcohol and drug tests and annual physical exam.
  • Ability to access and use printed service materials.
  • Ability to operate a bus.
  • Effective communication skills.
Experience:
  • Two years of experience as a mechanic.
  • Experience with diesel and gasoline engines.
Major Responsibilities:
Maintenance and Repairs:
  • Perform repairs, preventive maintenance, diagnostics, and inspections on district vehicles efficiently with minimal supervision.
  • Service vehicles according to schedule and maintain accurate records.
  • Use diagnostic equipment to evaluate mechanical problems.
  • Perform welding and minor body work.
  • Replace tires using hand tools, air ratchets, and tire equipment.
  • Inspect vehicles and evaluate system conditions; perform servicing as needed.
  • Demonstrate preventive maintenance and visual inspections to helpers when applicable.
  • Perform scheduled preventive maintenance tasks.
Safety:
  • Follow safety procedures and operate tools and equipment safely.
  • Ensure tools and equipment are in safe condition.
  • Report unsafe conditions promptly.
  • Follow safety protocols and emergency procedures.
Other:
  • Maintain detailed records of repairs and services.
  • Operate buses and vehicles as needed.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
Supervisory Responsibilities:

None.

Physical and Environmental Factors:
  • Use of diagnostic and repair tools; work in various physical positions including heavy lifting (45+ lbs.), climbing, and working in uncomfortable positions.
  • Work outdoors and indoors in various environmental conditions, including extreme temperatures, dust, chemicals, noise, and hazards.
  • Work in tight or enclosed spaces, sometimes alone, with irregular hours.
Mental Demands:

Maintain emotional control under stress.
