GENERAL DESCRIPTION

This position is responsible for conducting surveys on freshwater impoundments and rivers; collecting and recording biological data; conducting outreach events for diverse groups of people; purchasing and working with Window's Office systems; and performing manual labor, including lifting supplies and materials up to 50 lbs. and performing maintenance on boats, motors, trailers, trucks, and buildings.

Under the direction of the Team Leader, this position performs fish and wildlife conservation work and assists in the collection, recording, and processing of biological data on the state’s freshwater fisheries. The role involves interacting with and working closely with the general public to gather fisheries‑related data, provide information, and conduct outreach. Responsibilities also include maintaining equipment and facilities, operating boats and sampling equipment, fabricating special equipment for projects, completing routine administrative paperwork, and performing additional duties as assigned.

Compliance with all Agency, Division, and Branch rules, regulations, and procedures is required.

Note:

Selection as a Fish and Wildlife Technician III requires at least five years of experience as a TPWD Fish and Wildlife Technician II and the ability to perform additional advanced duties and responsibilities.

RESPONSIBILITIES

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Qualifications
  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Fish and Wildlife Technician I (FWT I) – No experience required.
  • FWT IB – Two years of relevant experience.
  • FWT II – Four years of relevant experience.
  • FWT III – Five years of experience as a TPWD Fish and Wildlife Technician II and capability to perform significant additional duties.
  • Valid class A Texas driver’s license or ability to obtain one within 30 days of employment.
Acceptable Substitutions
  • For FWT IB and II, an accredited college or university degree (Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD) may substitute for two years of relevant experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Accredited college or university degree in Fisheries Science or a related biological science discipline.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Basic mechanics, carpentry, and electrical wiring knowledge (FWT I).
  • Proficiency with fisheries sampling equipment.
  • Ability to operate boats and manage field logistics.
  • Strong communication skills for public outreach.
  • Physical stamina for manual labor and equipment maintenance.
