Position: Environmental Health Specialist 1
Location: Ohio

Environmental Health Specialist 1 (Dairy Plant)

Ohio Department of Agriculture is seeking a Dairy Plant Environmental Health Specialist 1, headquartered in Allen, Auglaize, Shelby or Logan County. This full‑time role requires a college transcript, registration as an Environmental Health Specialist‑In‑Training or Registered Environmental Health Specialist, and the ability to provide own transportation. All other applications will only be considered if an internal bargaining unit applicant is not selected for this position.

What

You'll Do
  • Conduct inspections of dairy facilities, dairy facility records and dairy facility reports in accordance with Chapter 917 of the Ohio Revised Code.
  • Conduct examinations for issuance of weigher, sampler, or tester licenses.
  • Collect and transport samples for laboratory analysis.
  • Initiate appropriate enforcement action (e.g., warning letter, license suspension, or revocation).
  • Explain dairy rules, laws, and program policies to the dairy industry.
  • Conduct field reviews of dairy equipment, devices and systems.
  • Investigate complaints and offer solutions.
  • Review plans for new or altered milking systems, dairy equipment and facilities.
  • Prepare inspection reports and interoffice correspondence.
  • Assist in conducting special studies.
  • Attend staff meetings and give speeches and presentations to industry groups and other professional organizations.
  • Collect data and information for consideration by the Sanitarian Program Administrator that may result in rule changes or interpretations.
  • Collect evidence and testify in administrative hearings and court trials.
Qualifications
  • Completion of an undergraduate core program in agriculture from an accredited college or university, with specialization in dairy science, animal science or food science; OR 24 months of training or experience in management of dairy production or dairy processing operations.
  • Must provide own transportation.
  • Must acquire registration as an environmental health specialist in training or environmental health specialist prior to engaging in practice of environmental health, not later than 90 days from date of employment.
  • Must provide a college transcript to prove eligibility for Environmental Health Specialist‑In‑Training and/or Registered Environmental Health Specialist.
  • Science courses approved by the board must be in biology, chemistry, physics, geology, mathematics, or statistics and be applicable to the practice of environmental health science.
Benefits and Compensation

Compensation range: $63,544 – $93,059. Full‑time, 40 hours per week. Classified position under OCSEA collective bargaining agreement.
