Job Overview
Fisheries Management internship positions will, under the direction of the Ecosystem Leader, perform routine fish and wildlife conservation work including assisting in the collection, recording, and editing of fishery-dependent and fishery-independent data in the Matagorda Bay ecosystem. Operates equipment safely under the supervision of trained staff. Works under close supervision with minimal latitude for independent judgement. Maintains gear, equipment, and facility.
Normal work hours are weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with some work in the evenings or weekends. 40‑hour weeks.
Job Duties
- Assists with collecting fishery-dependent and fishery-independent data. (40%)
- Assists with operating and maintaining the facility, vehicles, vessels, gear, and equipment. (35%)
- Assists with recording, editing, and summarizing fishery-dependent and fishery-independent data. (10%)
- Completes paper or electronic requirements such as timesheets, travel vouchers, vehicle logs, accident reports, etc. (10%)
- Performs additional duties as assigned; complies with Agency, Division, and Department rules, regulations, and procedures. (5%)
- Education:
Current enrollment as an undergraduate or graduate student in an accredited college or university, or recent graduate with a bachelor's degree or higher within the last 6 months; minimum of 18 completed semester credit hours; GPA of 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale or "Pass" on a Pass/Fail system. - Driver’s license:
Must possess a valid state driver's license.
- Major in Marine Biology/Marine Science, Fisheries Biology, Biology, Wildlife and Fisheries Sciences, Oceanography, Environmental Science, or Natural Resource Management.
- Knowledge of common office practices or administrative procedures.
- Skill in using personal computers.
- Skill in effective verbal and written communication.
- Skill in interacting with the public in a courteous and professional manner.
- Skill in establishing and maintaining effective work relationships with co‑workers and work-related contacts.
- Skill in making independent, sound, and timely decisions.
- Ability to learn to identify common marine finfish.
- Ability to handle marine organisms.
- Ability to collect and record data.
