Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) at Cincinnati Children’s are recognized as a vital part of our healthcare delivery team. Our APPs bring a passion for improving the lives of our patients and their families through leadership, creativity, and innovation driving exceptional care, research, quality, and process improvement. Cincinnati Children’s employs over 650 advanced practice providers with the number growing yearly because of their numerous respected contributions driving the mission of the institution, changing the outcomes for every patient and family.

The Heart Institute is the home of the Midwest’s first comprehensive Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU). We provide state‑of‑the‑art care for complex medical and surgical patients, from newborns to adults. Our CICU has three dual‑boarded (pediatric cardiology and critical care medicine) and five advanced fellowship trained Cardiac ICU physicians to ensure the best possible outcome for your child.

Care Services
  • Neonatal diagnosis and stabilization
  • Postoperative surgical care
  • Care following complex catheter interventions and hybrid procedures.
  • Management of complex arrhythmias
  • Care of pre‑ and post‑operative cardiac transplant patients
  • Management of pulmonary hypertension, heart failure and cardiomyopathy
  • Care of patients with heart disease who require intensive care for non‑cardiac diseases or surgeries.
  • Care of patients requiring mechanical heart assist, such as extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) or ventricular assist devices (Berlin Heart, Heart Mate II, Syn Cardia TAH and others)

Our 34‑bed CICU is a national leader in safety (procedure time‑out) and improvement initiatives (situation awareness and OR to ICU handoff). We have one of the lowest rates of bloodstream infections and catheter‑associated urinary tract infections in the nation.

SUBFUNCTION DEFINITION:
Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) are Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN), Physician Assistant (PA), Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA), Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) or Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) providing clinical services including diagnosis of illness, development and management of treatment plans, prescription of medication. APPs may see patients independently or as part of the health care team.

Scope for subspecialty role will not exceed the scope of the collaborating or supervising MD.
