Role Purpose
The Director of the Commercial Division is responsible for the overall commercial, financial, and organizational performance of the company’s energy-related shipping businesses. In addition to commercial leadership, the role carries corporate management responsibility including budgeting, KPI management, cost control, and key human-resources decisions to ensure a high-performing and sustainable organization.
Key Responsibilities Commercial Strategy & LeadershipDefine and execute the commercial strategy for the company’s energy shipping portfolio (e.g., LNG, FSRU, Ammonia, LCO2, and others).
Advise the Headquarters’ Executive Management on market outlooks, the target area/client and strategic initiatives.
Provide leadership across the Commercial Division to ensure alignment with corporate objectives and governance standards.
Corporate Management & Financial AccountabilityHold overall accountability for the company’s commercial and financial performance, monitoring and robust control over the cost, the revenue and cash flow.
Prepare, propose, and manage the annual budget, medium-term plans, and rolling forecasts in coordination with the Accounting/Finance and other divisions.
Human Resources & Organizational ManagementDevelop and maintain staffing and workforce plans for the Commercial Division in line with business strategy and goal.
Set performance objectives and conduct employees’ appraisals, ensuring fair, transparent, and performance-based evaluations.
Make or recommend decisions on employees’ development and succession planning.
Determine and propose compensation levels and benefits in coordination with HR and in accordance with company policies.
Foster a high-performance culture emphasizing accountability, compliance, diversity, and professional development.
Business Development & Market ExpansionIdentify new business opportunities, partnerships, and revenue streams across conventional and transition-related energy shipping.
Maintain senior relationships with customers, brokers, financial institutions, and strategic partners.
Translate market intelligence into actionable commercial and financial outcomes.
Risk, Governance & ComplianceManage commercial, financial, and organizational risks including market exposure, counter party risk, and people-related risks.
Ensure compliance with internal controls, sanctions, and applicable labor regulations.
Support corporate initiatives related to decarbonization and sustainable shipping.
Qualifications & Experience Essential- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Maritime Studies, Engineering, or related discipline.
- 15–20+ years’ experience in shipping, energy, or logistics with senior management responsibility.
- Proven experience in P&L ownership, budgeting, KPI management, and people management.
- Strong leadership and negotiation skills.
- Experience leading multi-national or multi-cultural teams.
- Exposure to energy transition or low-carbon shipping initiatives.
- This role will have to report to the Executive Management/Officers in the company’s headquarter in Japan and to communicate and liaise with the Japanese counterparts (such as customers). Proficiency in written and spoken Japanese is preferred.
