Student Highway Maintenance Tech - Albany, TX
Job Summary:
Students will work in TxDOT's Abilene District intern program during the summer months (May–August) with possible year‑round extension. Interns will gain hands‑on experience in highway maintenance and may pursue future careers with TxDOT.

Shackelford Co Maint Sec, 1200 Gregg St, Albany 76430.
•
Hours:
Shift – Day, onsite. Travel – 25% of the time.
• Salary: $18.00 per hour (Hourly, FLSA Nonexempt).
•

- Assist in repairing and erecting signs, drums, and barricades.
- Assist in warehousing and supply functions.
- Assist with repairs to potholes, shoulder edges, guardrails, and related roadway work.
- Assist with traffic control, including placing and gathering cones and flagging traffic.
- Operate light equipment, as required.
- Maintain picnic and rest areas, rights‑of‑way, maintenance yards, and comfort stations.
- Collect litter and roadway debris.
- Perform minor equipment maintenance and repairs.
- Perform plant and landscape maintenance: trimming, brushing, mowing, fertilizing, watering.
- Perform some carpentry and clerical duties.
- Repair and install posts and mailbox supports.
- Execute any additional responsibilities as assigned.
- Must be a student enrolled in high school or an institution of higher education (including trade/vocational schools). Minimum age 16.
- No prior experience required; full‑time or prorated part‑time experience acceptable.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and be at least 18 to perform driving duties and use power tools.
- Physical requirements include lifting up to 50 lbs., climbing ladders, working outdoors, and wearing protective gear.
- Must pass a pre‑employment drug test and comply with safety impact position random drug testing.
Work is physically demanding, involving variable weather exposure, noise, vibration, manual handling, use of hand tools, traffic control, and machinery operation. A pre‑employment physical is required.
