Overview

As a Custodian III at HSCS, you will contribute to a supportive atmosphere that values teamwork and dedicated service. This position involves senior‑level custodial work in a clinical state hospital setting, with occasional additional duties during disaster response or continuity operations.

Responsibilities
  • Perform, coordinate, clean, and sanitize state hospital buildings and treatment units, including housekeeping services in a clinical setting.
  • Conduct inspections of buildings and equipment, identifying problem areas and ensuring follow‑up actions are taken.
  • Order and restock custodial supplies and equipment, maintaining inventory records.
  • Provide backup to other custodians as needed, working under limited supervision with independent judgment.
  • Participate in or support disaster response and continuity of operations (COOP) activations, which may require alternate shift patterns or locations.
  • Maintain cleaning supplies, chemicals, equipment, and building maintenance tools, performing minor repairs as necessary.
  • Coordinate cleaning, dusting, and disinfecting of all surfaces, furniture, patient bedrooms, and hospital areas, ensuring proper use of cleaning chemicals and waste disposal.
  • Ensure patient units meet or exceed minimum cleanliness, health, safety, and infection control standards.
  • Assist the Custodian Manager in implementing the hospital safety and infection control program.
  • May be eligible for additional pay for work performed on evenings, nights, weekends, or at maximum security locations.
Qualifications & Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs)
  • One year of custodial/housekeeping experience in a nursing home, hospital, or similar residential environment; or 18 months proven work experience.
  • Knowledge of cleaning techniques, floor stripping and waxing, restroom disinfection, and inventory control principles.
  • Skills in operating custodial equipment and building maintenance tools.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions, stay on task, complete work timely, lift 50 pounds, stand/walk on hard floors for extended periods, and work irregular hours.
  • Ability to work harmoniously and productively with coworkers and patients.
  • Must pass fingerprint criminal background check, pre‑employment drug screen, and required registry checks (CANRS, NEA, LEIE); males 18‑25 must register with Selective Service.
  • All applicants must be at least 18 years of age;
    Waco Center for Youth applicants must be 21 years of age.
  • Must comply with HHSC immunization policy and state hospital procedures related to vaccinations.

This is a regular, full‑time, non‑exempt position located at Rusk State Hospital. The role may involve overtime, extended hours, and travel up to 20%. Applicants will be evaluated based on the qualifications above and required background checks.
