Job Overview

Applications are invited from enthusiastic, suitably qualified individuals to help provide a laboratory support service within the Metabolic Section within South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Pathology. The post holder will provide a range of administrative and laboratory support in this busy and interesting department, including receipting samples and booking requests into the computer system.

The successful candidate will have effective secretarial and computer skills, with excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Additionally, you should be able to work on your own initiative in prioritising workload and meeting deadlines, whilst also being able to work in a team.

Full in-service training will be provided.

The South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw (SYB) Pathology Partnership fully integrates the pathology services delivered on behalf of the Partner Trusts within the Integrated Care System (ICS) footprint;
Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust, Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust.

The Pathology Partnership will provide the best possible service for patients and clinicians; improving health outcomes, delivering quality and efficiency benefits and ensuring a sustainable workforce for the longer term.

Main duties of the job

Provide an efficient and effective clerical support service within the Metabolic Section of the Department of Clinical Chemistry, and to deliver scientific/technical procedures under the direction of the responsible healthcare scientist practitioner.

Pre-analytical processing of samples to include the receipt, preparation and processing.

Carry out routine administrative and clerical duties for the department, ensuring standards are maintained and deadlines are met.

Be a first point of contact for all direct enquiries (including telephone enquiries), and ensure these are acted upon appropriately.

  • GCSE (or equivalent) in Maths and English at level C/4 or above or Level 2 qualification e.g. NVQ, Apprenticeship, or some laboratory experience
Experience Essential criteria
  • Ability to follow and work to Standard Operating Procedures and Policy
Desirable criteria
  • Ability to work with other colleagues to improve and develop working practices
  • Previous NHS laboratory experience
  • Experience of some simple laboratory techniques
