The psychiatric hospitals are a hub of excellence for forensic mental health and complex psychiatric care, accredited by The Joint Commission. They provide state-of-the-art, recovery-oriented, science-based treatment. The Psychiatrist performs highly advanced psychiatric assessment work and reports to the State Hospital Medical Director. Responsibilities include conducting psychiatric activities, diagnosing and treating State Hospital patients, administering specialized psychiatric treatments, and reviewing and analyzing system data to ensure recovery plans are individualized. Provides consultation or training to direct care staff, participates in committees, and leads discussions to implement changes. Plans, assigns, and guides work in a multidisciplinary approach to patient care and may supervise others.
Performs other duties as relative to the position and works under minimal supervision with substantial latitude for initiative and judgment.
When required, participates in disaster response and Continuity of Operations (COOP) activities, which may involve alternate shift patterns or locations.
Essential Job Functions (EJFs)Attends work on a regular basis and may work a specified or rotating shift schedule, including overtime as needed. Utilizes a multidisciplinary approach to complete psychiatric assessments and administers treatments and medications per state hospital policies. Conducts performance improvement reviews per The Joint Commission, CMS, TAC, and state hospital policies. Attends and participates in meetings and committees, and conducts medication reviews and audits.
Establishes physician-patient relationships, reviews lab work, modifies recovery plans, and records deliberations in the electronic health record. Develops and implements person-centered recovery plans, guiding the recovery team and direct care staff. Documents plans with risk/benefit analysis and integrates psychiatric supports with other disciplines. Ensures implementation within HHSC and local policies, TJC standards, CMS conditions of participation, and TAC.
Collaborates with neurology for dually diagnosed individuals; coordinates with Neurologist and ensures psychiatry notes reflect collaboration. Consults with other psychiatrists and professionals to develop interventions and participates in restraint reduction efforts. Manages acute psychiatric care, including emergency restraints and medication orders.
Monitors system data related to quality of care, participates in performance improvement plans, and conducts audits. Maintains open communication with the Medical Director and other staff to ensure continuity of services and participates in Medical Staff Committees as appropriate.
Participates in mandatory training and ensures compliance with HIPAA, state, and federal regulations, and TJC CMS standards to provide quality psychiatric services.
