Overview

Now accepting applications for Public Safety Officer. Training provided for Triple Certification. Salary range: $79,090 – $104,979 (Based Upon CERTIFICATION Level). 48/96 shifts. Lateral entry available.

PSO Exam Details

The department utilizes the National Police Officer Selection Test (POST). The written test covers Arithmetic, Reading Comprehension, Grammar, and Incident Report Writing. After passing the written test, you will be eligible to participate in the physical agility test; it is pass/fail for each section. Physical agility standards include:
Vertical Jump 15.5 inches;
Sit Up 30 reps in 1 minute; 300 Meter Run 66 seconds;
Push Ups 25 reps in 1 minute; 1.5 Mile Run 15.54 minutes.

Exam Date:
Friday, February 13th at 8 AM. Eligible applicants will receive notification on scheduling the exam.

Requirements

At the time of application, possess a basic peace officer certification issued by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) or possess a basic firefighter certification issued by the Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) along with Texas Emergency Medical Technician certification. The remaining needed certification will be at the department’s expense. Hired applicants are expected to obtain all three to remain on staff.

Applicants must be able to perform the essential job functions of a Public Safety Officer.

  • High School diploma/GED and 45 college hours from an accredited college or university. Prior public safety service or military service experience may substitute for college hours.
  • Ability to work 48/96 hour shifts.
  • Ability to work in a team environment; dependability, reliability, good attendance required; perform additional job-related duties as needed; subject to twenty-four hour recall.

Entry Level Requirements:

U.S. Citizen, 21 years of age; valid Texas Driver's License; no Class B misdemeanor convictions or court-ordered supervision in the past 10 years; no convictions involving moral turpitude or family violence; applicants must have never used LSD or any hallucinogen; no history of illegal drug use in the last 5 years; no DWI or DUID convictions within past 10 years; correctable vision to 20/20;

normal color vision; normal hearing in each ear.

OBJECTIVE

To protect the city's residents and property by providing police, fire, and emergency medical services. This position responds to emergency calls, renders aid, investigates incidents, and completes administrative and incident reports.

    This is a non-supervisory position.

    Has frequent contact with other public safety department employees, other public safety agencies, related agencies and organizations, schools, youth, and the general public.
  • Examples of Work

    Essential Duties

    • Responds to emergency calls and routine complaints and disturbances; takes necessary action including police protection, fire suppression, and emergency medical treatment.
    • Directs traffic, escorts traffic, operates traffic radar monitoring equipment, and issues traffic citations.
    • Investigates crime, traffic, fire, and emergency medical incidents.
    • Questions witnesses, serves warrants, and takes statements and complaints.
    • Keeps records of activities; prepares, submits and files reports related to criminal acts, fire prevention and suppression activities, and medical related calls for service.
    • Attends training to improve job performance and meet certification requirements.
    • Patrols an assigned area by vehicle, alone or as a two-person team.
    • Approaches suspects of illegal activity; pursues and, if required, exerts the force necessary to apprehend, detain, or control the suspect for the purpose of making an arrest or maintaining law and order.
    • Appears and testifies in court as required.
    • Shares information and works with other public safety agencies as directed and appropriate.
    • Prepares and presents educational programs, e.g., Personal and Fire Safety.
    • Cleans and maintains vehicles, apparatus, equipment, and station.
    • Provides assistance and guidance to new recruits.
