Job Summary

The general accountant’s main duties include preparing financial statements, examining and analyzing a company’s accounts and ensuring compliance with financial reporting and other standard accounting procedures.

Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance from an accredited institution
• Must have 2+ years experience in an educational setting
• Critical thinker and problem solver;
• Experience with accounting software and data entry
• Excellent understanding of accounting rules and procedures, including the Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
• Advanced Excel skills (proficiency in using tables, pivot tables and lookup functions)
• Ability to work independently
• Analytical skills.
• Curiosity about processes and how processes can be made more efficient is essential
• Ability to pick-up concepts and learn new productivity tools is essential
• Strong attention to detail a must
• Strong communication skills
• Must be a self-starter
• Organization & time management

Role and Responsibilities

• Reconciling the company’s bank statements and bookkeeping ledgers
• Completing analysis of the employee expenditures
• Managing income and expenditure accounts
• Generating the company’s financial reports using income and expenditure data
• Keeping a check on the company’s finances based on financial status
• Filing and remitting taxes and other financial obligations
• Initiating and managing financial and accounting software used by the company.
• Reconciliation of and overall responsibility for assigned general ledger accounts (including investigation of variances and unusual items)
• Ensure compliance with accounting standards and regulations
• Liaising with other divisions as necessary
• Reconciling intercompany purchases and resolving discrepancies related to pricing
• Prepare balance sheets and post journal entries
• Reconciliation of related accounts and reporting for consolidation, taxation or other purposes
• Fixed expense analysis and monitoring:
• Determination of unposted fixed expense liabilities and accrual
• Monthly variance analysis (vs. budget, vs. forecast)
• Assist in budgeting functions related to fixed expenses
• Assist with audits and tax filings
• Assists finance manager in preparation of monthly/yearly closings
• Other duties as assigned
