Position Overview
Oversees inspection of construction methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build roadways, bridges, traffic signals, airports and related structures in accordance with plans and specifications; acts as a consultant regarding work progress and problem resolution. Conducts statewide oversight activities for construction projects and provides technical assistance and training. Trains others and may lead professional and technical employees. Reports to a licensed professional engineer with final approval authority.
EssentialDuties
- Performs engineering-related planning, design, data collection, inspections, assessments, analysis, and review activities for plan development.
- May serve as a lead worker or project leader.
- Monitors project phasing and traffic control plans and ensures safety standards are met.
- Observes and inspects ongoing construction work.
- Oversees construction record‑keeping; recommends payments, change orders, and reviews proposed changes; prepares reports.
- Oversees preparation of monthly and final estimates.
- Prepares and reviews correspondence.
- Resolves differences in interpretation of plans and specifications.
- Trains and mentors less experienced inspectors.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
- Education: High School Graduate or equivalent.
- Experience: 4 years in construction inspection or transportation engineering. Full‑time or prorated part‑time experience accepted; related college education or technical training may substitute one year of experience per year.
- Licenses and
Certifications:
Valid driver’s license; must operate a state vehicle.
- Extensive knowledge of plans, specifications, estimates, construction engineering policies, inspection methods, and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
- Expert skill in applying engineering fundamentals, leading and reviewing others’ work, interpreting information, maintaining safe relationships, overseeing projects, and exercising logic to define problems and make decisions.
- Subject to environmental conditions; extreme cold or heat for more than one hour; hazards such as moving vehicles, slips, falls, chemicals, and protective gear requirements.
- Medium work: lift up to 50 pounds; frequent lift or carry of up to 25 pounds.
- Requires walking, standing, crouching, speaking, and hearing at normal levels.
- Close visual acuity for data and computer screen work.
- This is a physically demanding role requiring a pre‑employment physical.
- Must pass a drug test; random drug testing applies to safety impact positions.
- Must wear personal protective equipment and comply with safety regulations.
- Requires weekend, holiday, and non‑standard hours; exposure to inclement weather.
Construction Project Manager based in Decatur, Texas. Experience leading inspectors in field and office settings is desired. Excellent communication, problem‑solving, and teamwork skills are essential.
A Day in the Life- Schedule review and liaison between contractor and department.
- Lead inspector: direct, train, and develop other inspectors.
- Inspect project sites individually and with team.
- Ensure safety and regulatory requirements are met.
- Assist with measurements, calculations, SW3P and barricade inspections.
- Process payments and prepare estimates.
