What to Expect

Tesla's Facilities Infrastructure team is looking for a dedicated and detail-oriented Mechanical systems engineer to support commissioning and startup activities at new and existing facilities. The ideal candidate will have a strong technical background in Mechanical Systems. In this role you will report to the commissioning lead and ensure that all mechanical systems are installed correctly, function as designed, meet operational requirements, and safety standards before project handover.

This position requires a blend of technical expertise, hands-on field experience, and strong problem-solving skills. Additionally, this role requires tenacity, a strategic mindset, and effective communication skills. Willingness to travel as needed.

What You'll Do

* Develop, review, and execute detailed commissioning plans, procedures, and checklists for mechanical systems, including HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning), process piping, rotating equipment (chillers, compressors, pumps, ect), static equipment, and associated controls systems

* Review design documents, submittals, P&IDs (Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams), controls narratives, and specifications to ensure compliance, constructability and operability

* Perform and/or witness acceptance tests, site inspections, pre-functional checks and functional testing to ensure systems performance meets project standards

* Witness and document equipment startup and testing performed by internal parties, contractors and vendors

* Manage contractors and coordinate with internal resources to perform commissioning activities

* Track mechanical scope & commissioning contractor progress, risks, budget, and schedule. Produce regular reports of those metrics

* Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve mechanical system issues, ensuring timely and effective solutions

What You'll Bring

* Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or the equivalent in experience

* Minimum of 3 years of experience in a field engineering position with preference in commissioning or operations

* Hands-on field experience in planning and commissioning of piping systems, chilled water plants, compressed air, HVAC, and supporting control systems

* Experience working in high tech manufacturing, pharmaceutical, semiconductor, healthcare, industrial utilities, or similar preferred

* Familiarity with air/water balancing and equipment performance testing is highly preferred

* Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

* Excellent communication and documentation skills with ability to understand complex problems and distill the message into a clear plan

* Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and make sound judgments under pressure while still promoting a strong safety culture

* A curious mindset with a desire to continue learning
